A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found
that 20% of all new drugs are found to have serious or life threatening adverse
effects unknown or undisclosed at the time of drug approval. Researchers at
Harvard Medical School and Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy organization,
performed the study. Within seven years after a drug is first introduced onto
the U.S. market, half of all serious adverse effects are detected, most commonly

US$2,004.28, which doesn't include the costs of frayed nerves and risks to health.
Sound crazy? Perhaps no more than the stampede to ban the incandescent light
bulb in favour of compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). According to an April
12 article in The Ellsworth American, Bridges had the misfortune of breaking
a CFL during installation in her daughter's bedroom: It dropped and shattered
on the carpeted floor. Aware that CFLs contain potentially hazardous substances,
Bridgescalled her local Home Depot for advice. The store
told her that the
CFL contained mercury and that she should call the Poison Control hotline,
which in turn directed her to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

Hidden Hazards of Microwave Cooking
Dr. Mercola - "Recent research shows that microwave oven
cooked food suffers severe molecular damage. When eaten, it causes abnormal

According to Dr. Cristina Garcia-Viguera, co-author of the
study, microwaved broccoli loses 97 percent, 74 percent, and 87 percent of the
three major cancer-protecting antioxidant compounds (flavonoids, sinapics and
caffeoyl-quinic derivatives). By comparison, steamed broccoli loses 11 percent,
0 percent and 8 percent of the very same antioxidants. In a 1992 article in
the journal Pediatrics, a team of researchers from Stanford University reported
that re-heating human breast milk in a microwave oven – even at a low setting
– can destroy some of its important disease-fighting capabilities. Specifically,
it lost lysozyme, which protects against bacterial infection. The fact that
adverse changes were found at very low temperatures suggested to the researchers
that “microwaving itself may in fact cause some injury to the milk above and beyond the heating.”
Vitamin B-12 is another nutrient that can be destroyed by microwaving. Japanese
research reported in Science News in 1998 found that as little as six minutes
of microwave cooking destroyed half of the vitamin B-12 in dairy foods and meat,
a much higher rate of destruction than other cooking techniques. Microwaving
baby formula is also a problem, according to Dr. Lita Lee of Hawaii in the Lancet
medical journal in 1989. She wrote that microwaving baby formula converts certain
trans-amino acids into synthetic substances like trans-fatty acids. Further,
one of the amino acids, L-proline, converts to a substance known to be poisonous
to the nervous system and to the kidneys.
Dr. Hans Ulrich Hertel, who is now retired, worked as a food scientist for
many years with one of the major Swiss food companies that do business on a
global scale. A few years ago, he was fired from his job for questioning certain
processing procedures that denatured the food. In 1991, he and a Lausanne University
professor published a research paper indicating that food cooked in microwave
ovens could pose a greater risk to health than food cooked by conventional means.
An article also appeared in issue 19 of the Journal Franz Weber in which it
was stated that the consumption of food cooked in microwave ovens had cancerous
effects on the blood.
The research paper itself followed the article. On the
cover of the magazine there was a picture of the Grim Reaper holding a microwave
oven in one of his hands. Dr. Hertel was the first scientist to conceive and
carry out a quality clinical study on the effects microwaved nutrients have
on the blood and physiology of the human body. His small but well controlled
study showed the degenerative force produced in microwave ovens and the food
processed in them. The scientific conclusion showed that microwave cooking changed
the nutrients in the food; and, changes took place in the participants' blood
that could cause deterioration in the human system. Hertel's scientific study
was done along with Dr. Bernard H. Blanc of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and
the University Institute for Biochemistry.

The period once euphemistically called the Age of the Miracle Drug is now
dead. And the indiscriminate use of antibiotics is leading us to one of the
most frightening eras in recent memory. That is, the return of infectious diseases
for which there is no effective treatment. Two decades following the introduction
of antibiotics, the medical community began to see a disturbing trend. Bacterial
infections that were once treatable no longer responded to antibiotics. Penicillin
is effective today against only 10 percent of the strains of Staphylococcus

Downing an “energy drink” may boost blood pressure as well as energy, researchers
said in a small study presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific
Sessions. In the study, conducted by Wayne State University researchers, blood
pressure and heart rate levels increased in healthy adults who drank two cans
a day of a popular energy drink. Within four hours of energy drink consumption,
maximum systolic blood pressure (the top number that represents pressure while
the heart contracts to pump blood to the body) increased by 7.9 percent on day
one and 9.6 percent on day seven; diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number
that represents the pressure when the heart relaxes between beats) increased
by 7 percent and 7.8 percent, respectively, within two hours of energy drink
consumption. Heart rate increased by 7.8 percent on day one and 11 percent on
day seven. Over the duration of the study, heart rates increased five to seven
beats per minute and systolic blood pressure increased 10 millimeters of mercury
(mmHg) after energy drink consumption, the researchers reported. No significant
ECG changes were observed.

the government an internal study linking a toxic chemical in Teflon to birth
defects in some children, an advocacy group charged. Residents near the West
Virginia plant have filed a class action lawsuit against DuPont. The Teflon
chemical, C8, is part of a broader family called perfluorochemicals. Tests have
shown that C8 and similar chemicals can cause liver damage and reproductive

Tests on whale meat on sale in Japan have revealed astonishing levels of
mercury. While it has long been known that the animals accumulate
heavy metals such as mercury in their tissues, the levels discovered have surprised
even the experts. Two of the 26 liver samples examined contained over 1970 micrograms
of mercury per gram of liver. That is nearly 5000 times the Japanese government's
limit for mercury contamination, 0.4 micrograms per gram. At these concentrations,
a 60-kilogram adult eating just 0.15 grams of liver would exceed the weekly
mercury intake considered safe by the World Health Organization. Acute intoxication
