Tap and Bottled Water Hidden Toxins Threatens
Our Health
A vast array of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants,
mood stabilizers and sex hormones — have been found in the drinking water
supplies in many cities in the US and the UK. Tap water in 42 states is
contaminated with more than 140 unregulated chemicals that lack safety
standards. In an analysis of more than 22 million tap water quality tests,
most of which were required under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act,
found that water suppliers across the U.S. detected 260 contaminants in
water served to the public. One hundred forty-one (141) of these detected
chemicals — more than half — are unregulated. Researchers have also
found potentially toxic trace element in bottled water.

shows. The presence of so many prescription drugs — and over-the-counter

How
do the drugs get into the water? People take pills. Their bodies absorb
some of the medication, but the rest of it passes through and is flushed
down the toilet. The wastewater is treated before it is discharged into
reservoirs, rivers or lakes. Then, some of the water is cleansed again
at drinking water treatment plants and piped to consumers. But most treatments
do not remove all drug residue. And while researchers do not yet understand
the exact risks from decades of persistent exposure to random combinations
of low levels of pharmaceuticals, recent studies -- which have gone virtually
unnoticed by the general public -- have found alarming effects on human
cells and wildlife.
The federal government doesn't require any testing and hasn't set safety
limits for drugs in water. Of the 62 major water providers contacted, the
drinking water for only 28 was tested. Among the 34 that haven't: Houston,
Chicago, Miami, Baltimore, Phoenix, Boston and New York City's Department
of Environmental Protection, which delivers water to 9 million people.

the Big-4 companies have turned bottled water into “America’s most affordable
status symbol”. Using images that evoke ‘activity’, ‘health’, ‘relaxation’,
‘pureness’ and ‘replenishment’, the bottled water giants dupe consumers
into buying something that largely exists in an imaginary environment.
Industry slogans like ‘get hydrated or die’ expose internal corporation
contradictions such as the fact that the same companies that sell dehydrating
soft drinks are promoting bottled water as a solution to dehydration. more....
German
researchers have found that the longer a bottle of water sits on a store
shelf or in a household pantry, the higher the dose of antimony it contains.
Amounts of this potentially toxic trace element were measured for 15 brands
of Canadian bottled water and 48 European brands. Concentrations reached
more than 100 times the average level of antimony in pristine groundwaters
(2 parts per trillion).
However, the concentration was even higher after the bottles were left
to sit at room temperature for six months. Antimony concentrations in the
Canadian bottled waters increased by 19 percent, concentrations in the
European brands increased by 90 percent. Most of the water tested was packaged
in bottles made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Antimony trioxide
is used as a catalyst in the manufacture of PET. The different concentrations
of antimony in the various brands might have been caused by differing temperatures,
water pHs, or exposure to sunlight. more...
We Americans pitch 38 billion water bottles a year into landfills --
in excess of $1 billion worth of plastic. And 24% of the bottled water
we buy is tap water repackaged by Coca-Cola and PepsiCo. (Bottled
water: A river of money). There is a perception among many people
that bottled water is somehow more healthy or pure than water from their
tap. This is simply an illusion of marketing. A four-year study by the
National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), released in 1999, found that
one-fifth of the sampled bottled waters contained known neurotoxins and
carcinogens such as styrene, toluene and xylene. Another NRDC study found
that, out of 103 brands of bottled water, one-third contained traces of
arsenic and E. coli. This means that out of a sample of 1,000 bottles sold
in the U.S., at least 300 would have some level of chemical contamination.
A Suffolk County Study in the USA tested 88 bottled waters and what
they found was horrifying. It was this study which discovered the cancer
agent, benzene, in Perrier and caused it to be withdrawn, but they also
found: Freon, kerosene, toluene, trichloroethylene, and xylene in a number
of other bottled waters. The NRDC in the USA reported that one-third of
bottled water products they tested were found to violate an enforceable
state standard or exceed microbiological purity guidelines, or both, in
at least one sample. Despite popular misperceptions (spawned primarily
by advertising), bottled water is not regulated as strictly as tap water.
In fact, unlike tap water, regulations allow bottled water to contain some
contamination by E. coli or fecal coliform and don't require disinfection
for cryptosporidium or giardia. And, as Consumer Reports tests discovered,
unhealthy chemicals can migrate from plastic bottles into the water. Ten

Sometimes
bottled water is tap water: In spite of the springs, mountains, and other
bucolic scenes depicted on labels, some bottled water is nothing more than
tap water, NRDC and Consumer Reports have found. The Aquafina brand, for
example, is drawn from the municipal water supplies of Detroit, Fresno,
and other cities. Coke and Pepsi - the main producers of bottled water
(under different brand names) also use tap, not spring water.
The most common plastic used in water bottle manufacturing is PET (polyethylene
terephthalate), an environmentally unfriendly substance that actually
requires 17.5 kilograms of water to produce only 1 kilogram of PET. In
fact, more water is used to make PET bottles than is actually put into
them. The production of the plastic also produces numerous byproducts that
are extremely harmful to the environment. The Container Recycling Institute
reported that 14 billion water bottles were sold in the U.S. in 2002, yet
only 10 percent of these bottles were recycled - 90 percent ended up in
the trash. That's an extra 12.6 billion plastic bottles for the landfills;
bottles that contained water that was no more - and often less - healthy
than tap water.
There is a correlation between the consumption of soft water (purified
water is extremely soft) and the incidence of cardiovascular disease. Cells,
tissues and organs do not like to be dipped in acid and will do anything
to buffer this acidity including the removal of minerals from the skeleton
and the manufacture of bicarbonate in the blood. The longer one drinks
distilled water, the more likely the development of mineral deficiencies
and an acid state. I have done well over 3000 mineral evaluations using
a combination of blood, urine and hair tests in my practice. Almost without
exception, people who consume purified water exclusively, eventually develop
multiple mineral deficiencies. Those who supplement their purified or distilled
water intake with trace minerals are not as deficient but still not as
adequately nourished in minerals as their non-purified water drinking counterparts
even after several years of mineral supplementation.
Purified water tends to be acidic and can only be recommended as a way
of drawing poisons out of the body. Once this is accomplished, the continued
drinking of purified water is a bad idea. People in Canada and the USA
are consuming more bottled water than coffee, tea, apple juice or even
milk. But are they being duped by misleading promises that bottled water
is healthier, purer and fresher than tap water?

from Ismail Serageldin, former vice president of the World Bank, in 1999.
This is the same World Bank that encourages the privatization of the world's
water supply. The same World Bank whose members have financial ties to
multinational corporations such as General Electric and Enron. The Polaris

the Bottle: An Exposé of the Bottled Water Industry, sheds light
on the deceptive practices of four big companies that dominate the bottled
water industry: Nestlé, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola and Danone. Inside the
Bottle provides examples of how citizens can target the “big four” bottled
water companies, control private water-takings, and promote public water
management in their communities.
Bottled water cost more than gasoline! This time last year earth-policy.org
published an article
stating, "The global consumption of bottled water reached 154 billion liters
(41 billion gallons) in 2004, up 57 percent from the 98 billion liters
consumed five years earlier. Even in areas where tap water is safe to drink,
demand for bottled water is increasing--producing unnecessary garbage and
consuming vast quantities of energy. Although in the industrial world bottled
water is often no healthier than tap water, it can cost up to 10,000 times
more. At as much as $2.50 per liter ($10 per gallon), bottled water costs
more than gasoline."
Bottled water is not necessarily any healthier than the water from your
tap. In fact, roughly forty percent of bottled water begins as tap water,

are also used in the packaging [and transporting] of water. The most commonly
used plastic for making water bottles is polyethylene terephthalate (PET),
which is derived from crude oil. Making bottles to meet Americans' demand
for bottled water requires more than 1.5 million barrels of oil annually,
enough to fuel some 100,000 U.S. cars for a year. Worldwide, some 2.7 million

The "very clean waters" produced by reverse osmosis, (which also is
use by most bottled companies) is called "hungry" or "death" water. It
is so clean that nothing is left in it. The water is charged with positive
ions instead of negative ions and is also acidic instead of alkaline. The
water you drink is supposed to bring all nutrients to the destination and
to flush out any free radicals.
Free radicals are basically poisoned waste products produced by smoking,
drinking, inhaling polluted air and even by eating and exercising. Your
body is like a car engine, every time you turn it on, it burns fuel to
move your car, but by doing so produces smoke, which is poisoned.
If you take in this totally clean water then, instead of supplementing
minerals to the body it does just the opposite - it takes them away. Can
you see that? Can you see that if you would spill clean water over a dirty
rock you would have some of the dirt being washed away with the clean water?
That is what happens with hungry (totally clean water) - except it does
not take away the dirt but it depletes the body of minerals, calcium and

Water for Profit In the past ten years, three giant global corporations have quietly
assumed control over the water supplied to almost 300 million people in
every continent of the world. A 12-month investigation by journalists in
Canada, the U.S., Europe, Asia and Latin America shows that the results
range from questionable to disastrous.
The most toxic commercial beverages that people consume (i.e. cola beverages
and other soft drinks) are made from purified water. Studies have consistently
shown that heavy consumers of soft drinks (with or without sugar) spill

Alkaline neutralizes acid. Drinking alkaline water
helps our body dissolve acid wastes and make it easier for the body to
dispose of them safely. Since the accumulation of acid wastes is aging,
the reduction of acid wastes is reverse aging. Alkaline water is not a
medicine to cure any disease. However, if consumed regularly, alkaline
water gradually reduces the accumulated acid wastes. As a result of acid
reduction, there are many reports of natural health improvement in Japan.
One American cancer center showed significant improvements in their cancer
therapy by getting 1,000 patients to drink 7 glasses of alkaline water
a day. Their research concluded that the alkaline minerals in natural,
alkaline water with a pH 7.5 helped to neutralize acidosis and thus helped
to prevent cancer. Water, the origin of Life, contains 2 parts hydrogen
and one part oxygen. Alkaline water is water that contains a larger amount
of oxygen as compared to hydrogen. By drinking alkaline water, we increase
our intake of oxygen compared to drinking plain water. The advantage of

neutralize acidic wastes, making them more soluble in the blood vessels.

Tap water can contain impurities, including inorganic poisons

imaging reveals that most tap water is organized into microclusters of
about 12 water molecules each. In alkalinized water, the microclusters
are reduced in size to only six molecules per cluster. This enhances the

Purified Water and Distilled Water are Bad For You
A quality water ionizer takes in regular tap water which has both acid
and alkaline minerals in it and has a typical pH value of 7. The system
then releases water with a pH value of 9 or higher with all the alkaline
minerals from the original tap water. At the same time it releases acidic
water with a pH value of 5 or lower with all the acid minerals in the original

ORP
is a "potential" energy that is stored and ready to be put to work. It's
not necessarily working, but we know that the energy is there and we can
measure it. Another way to look at this potential might be to look at pressure.
If you blow up a balloon, and there is air pressure inside. As long as
the balloon is closed, the pressure remains and can be measured. When released,
this potential energy becomes kinetic energy.
In electrical terms, potential energy can be measured.
When we use the term "potential" in describing ORP, we are actually talking
about electrical potential as expressed in millivolts. This potential is
measured in water with an ORP meter. What you measure is the very slight
voltage in water. We are actually measuring the presence of oxidizing or
reducing agents by their specific electrical charge, thus Oxidation Reduction
"Potential". High pH water has more "reducing" agents (-ORP) and low pH
water has more oxidizing agents (+ORP).
Oxidation is what turns an apple brown after it is cut
or causes metal to rust. Rust weakens metal and signifies the deterioration
of the apple. The process of oxidation “steals” electrons from the surface
being oxidized. When we measure a something’s oxidizing potential, it is
expressed in +ORP and measures the concentration of OH+ ions or oxidizing
agents.
A “reducing” agent is simply something that inhibits
or slows the process of oxidation. The reducing agent does this by “donating”
an electron. When we measure a something’s oxidation reduction potential,
it is expressed in terms of –ORP and measures the concentration of OH-
ions or reducing agents. In its most basic form a reducing agent is an
“antioxidant” ~ reducing oxidation. Follow this link to read more detailed

The ORP of most tap water in the
USA is between +200 to +600mv and so is an oxidizing agent. High pH ionized
water demonstrates a –ORP and so is a reducing agent or “antioxidant”.
Most bottled waters are very acidic (low pH) and also have higher ORPs

Aging or premature aging
is a process of oxidation within the body. In other words the body rusts
and is damaged by oxidation. The antioxidant molecule has an extra ion
and donates it to the free radical effectively neutralizing it which is
very important to our health and longevity. This antioxidant
effect is also known as Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP).
Air, food and water have
an Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) value which can be measured by an
ORP meter which is a millivolt measurement of negative and positive electrical

Reduction Potential (ORP).
The pH stands for "potential hydrogen" and is a measurement that
provides an indication of the level of hydrogen in a substance. It is measured
by the pH scale. Proper body pH is an important factor in good health.
If
any substance changes from pH 7 to pH 8, it has become ten times more alkaline.
Conversely, if it has changes from neutral pH 7 to pH 6, it is 10 times
more acidic. As an example, a popular Cola, at pH 2.5 is almost 50,000
times more acidic than neutral water, and needs 32 glasses of neutral (pH
7) water to counteract the consumption of one glass of Cola. (Active ingredient:
Phosphoric Acid) You can now see that a change from the normal level 7.365
to pH 7 would mean that your blood would suddenly be around 4 times as
acid as it should be. You would die from poisoning by your own blood. This
is why every body system is used to support the correct blood pH.
You can also understand from this that our blood pH
can be affected at any time of the day by a myriad of events; food, drink,
stress, pollution, exercise, or beneficially, by meditation, by drinking
alkaline water, by deep breathing, even by being happy.
The other way an ionizer alters the water is in ORP.
This stands for Oxidation Reduction Potential (also referred to as "Redox"
- it's the same thing). Most leading water researchers from Asia agree
that in ionized water the elevated pH is good, but that ORP is more important.
Alteration to the OPR is what causes the microclustering, antioxidant and
oxygenating effects. more:
pH and ORP alteration is a highly variable
and depends primarily on three factors:
1. The source water and its natural mineral content – water varies widely
in this respect
2. The voltage applied to the water during electrolysis
3. The flow rate through the ionizer’s water cell
These variables have a dramatic effect on pH and ORP.
An ionizer works primarily on the mineral content in the water. It is
the dissolved mineral content (referred to as TDS) which creates the pathway
for the “ionization” (or more correctly electrolysis) to occur. Water without
mineral content or TDS, like reverse osmosis or distilled water, will not
conduct the current and therefore can not be “ionized”. This first variable
is the most crucial to performance. Tap waters vary widely in the dissolved
mineral content. The higher the mineral content (“harder” water), the higher
the levels of pH and ORP alteration an ionizer can achieve; the lower the
mineral content (“softer water”), the lower levels the of pH and ORP alteration.
The importance of this variable can not be emphasized enough.
The
heart of an ionizer is the water cell which contains the electrodes. The
electrodes are what deliver the current and creates the “ionization”. We
control the voltage conducted through the electrodes and then to the water
by selecting the different "Alkaline" settings on an ionizer. The higher
the Alkaline setting (or voltage), the more alteration you will achieve
in pH and ORP. Effective conductivity is the primary determinant – not
electrode size - of effective delivery of the current or voltage into the
water needed to create electrolysis. Do not be fooled by the claim some
manufacturers make that larger electrodes will necessarily deliver better
performance. Generally the larger electrodes have poorer conductivity –
so they have to be larger.
The flow rate through the machine determines how long
the water is actually in contact with the electrodes receiving the voltage
and the effects of electrolysis. If your flow is fast (say you could fill
a quart or liter in 15 seconds) then the water is not processing very long
and not receiving much alteration. Conversely, with a slow the flow rate
(say the same quart or liter took 60 seconds) the water is in the chamber
in contact with the electrodes longer and will receive more alteration.
You can always achieve higher pH and ORP readings with reduced flow rates.
So controlling the flow is an important variable in performance.
On most ionizers you can only adjust the flow rate by using your faucet
or tap. If your faucet is all the way "on", the water will process very
fast through the machine. If your faucet is just barely "on", this reduces
the flow and the water will process for much longer. With a fast flow rate
you may only achieve slight alteration in pH and ORP, slow it down and
you will get higher pH and better ORP. Simply put, speed it up, you get
a less alteration; slow it down and you'll get more.
To illustrate this whole principle lets look at two
very different tap waters and their effect on performance. Remember the
crucial variable is the dissolved mineral content or TDS (total dissolved
solids) which is measured in parts per million. This creates the pathway
for the ionization to occur. In Carlsbad, California the tap water tests
at 385 - 501ppm of total dissolved solids. The tap water in Seattle, Washington
tests at approximately 40 – 47ppm. You could test water from an ionizer
in Carlsbad at a given setting and flow rate and you would get a certain
result. You could test the exact same ionizer in Seattle without altering
the setting or flow rate and you would get dramatically different results.
Is it the ionizer? No. It is the water as the main variable in performance.
There is much less pathway in Seattle’s water. To further illustrate variability,
you could alter the voltage or flow rates through the ionizer in either
Carlsbad or Seattle and you would get different results again.
Research states that the ideal level for drinking alkaline water is
between pH8.5 – pH9.5 with an ORP of -250mv. It is unimportant if an ionizer
creates big -ORP numbers at really high levels of pH. For most people,
water over a pH10 begins to acquire an unpleasant taste due to the heavy
concentration of minerals. What is important is drinking water at the mildly
alkaline levels of pH8.5 – pH9.5 with good -ORP. Of course the Athena will
create the big – ORP numbers at the higher pH ranges, but it is designed
to give you the best ORP at the lower levels of pH. These are the levels
that you will actually enjoy drinking. That is where the bang for your
buck is. There is no need for ionized water to taste bad and be the “cod
liver oil” of this generation!
Comparing ORP Lastly, comparing ORP is a tricky business. Stating absolute values
is impossible. Anyone who really knows and understands ionizers/ORP would
agree. Anyone who states absolutes in performance proves their ignorance
on the science behind it. Further, pH and ORP are not tied to one another.
In other words you can measure ORP in two pH9 waters and get two very different
readings. Another factor to consider when comparing ORP is the level of
pH you will drink.
Water with a pH over about pH10 does not taste good
to the vast majority of people. Japanese research states that the ideal
range for drinking alkaline water is between pH8.5 and pH9.5. Given this,
testing ORP at those levels is where the real bang for the buck is; ORP
at a pH level one would actually drink. Therefore, the only salient way
to compare ORP in ionizers is side-by-side, with the same source water
and each machine set to achieve the same drinkable level of pH. If you
drink pH9 then the ORP you get at pH9 is the effective ORP in the ionizer.
Not some “absolute” or even extraordinarily high ORP.
So understanding performance is like understanding a dance between the
three variables. Understanding this dance is crucial to making an informed
decision when purchasing an ionizer, and also in getting the most out of
your ionizer’s performance.
With the advent of electrolysis water treatment in the Japanese marketplace,
electrolysis alkaline water was introduced into the dairy farms. This is
now beginning to impact on dairy farms in the USA and other countries.
In Japan, knowing the positive health benefits and results that were acquired
through human consumption, alkaline water was used in place of tap water
as the sole source of water for dairy cows. The results of this water usage
is reported in the subsequent findings. The information was obtained through
27 dairy farms along with a report from a group of veterinarians. The source
of each report is identified at the beginning of each report.
In general, the following measurable conditions were noted:
1. An increase in milk output by 18% - 28%.
2. A notable improvement in the quality of milk.
3. Elimination of strong feces and urine odors.
4. Healthier skin condition.
5. Minimized injury to the udder.
6. Decrease in diarrhea cases.
7. Strengthening of the legs.
8. Increased appetite.
9. Able to reduce mineral supplements normally added to the feed.
10. Due to an improved health condition coupled with stronger legs,
extended the productive life span of the cows.
11. Improved the fertility rate and reduced still births in new-born
calves.
Aside from the above, the following opinions were noted by the veterinarians:
1. A noticeably increased appetite; no new supplements were added to
their diet.
Increase in appetite noted in older cows also.
2. Well digested foods.
3. A beautiful sheen on the cows' hair.
4. Higher fertility rate; higher pregnancy rate.
5. A new-born calf exposed to alkali water matures quicker.
6. A dramatic increase in milk production.
7. Improved liver condition.
8. Strengthened legs.
9. Minimizing of sicknesses; tremendously improved health condition.
10. No adverse conditions noted with the consumption of alkali water.
Lesser visits made by veterinarians.
By drinking alkaline water, we increase our intake of oxygen compared
to drinking plain water. The advantage of drinking alkaline water is that
while being absorbed by the body, it helps neutralize acidic wastes, making
them more soluble in the blood vessels. Thus, acidic wastes will be easily
drained out of the body in the form of urine or sweat.
Warning - Alkaline Drops
- I would not recommend using drops at all. If you choose to use drops,
be very careful of where you store the bottles. The bottle I purchased
looked just like a Visine bottle and I accidentally put a drop in my right
eye. I am not completely blind but I have some eye DAMAGE DUE TO ALKALI
BURN. Thankfully, my contact lens saved me from being completely blind.
The only emergency instruction on the bottle was "flush the eye." If my
husband had not had the sense to take me to the ER, I would've just followed
the directions and would be completely blind. Please be aware that if any
gets in your eyes, you must GO TO THE ER IMMEDIATELY. Home flushing of
the eye is not sufficient to save the eye from damage. The attending physician
could not believe how innocuous the bottle appeared and how it had very
little warning of how potent the chemicals were.
