Some breeders and trainers prefer to feed their dog twice a day to avoid stressing their digestive system.  I have been feeding Shasta strickly raw food once a day to give her digestive track a chance to rest which kept her healthy and never overweight. No two dogs are alike or have the same feeding requirement. It is entirely to the dog's owner to decide what is best for their dog. Some people claim that is is best to fee raw food, first and wait 6 hours before feeding kibbles to prevent fermentation in the stomach which may cause some dogs to have gas. They claim that it takes 18 hours for a dog to digest kibbles and only 6 hours to digest raw food. My friend, Pat Hartman, who is a German Shepherd expert recommends to never feed dry kibbles to German Shepherd dogs but to soak the kibbles first. Personally, I have not found this to be true. My new dog, Kuuma, eats dry kibbles (healthy kibbles) and raw meat at the same time without any bad effects. 

What is Pica? Pica is the act of eating non-food items. In less serious cases, cats may chew or suck on objects, but not actually swallow them. Common targets include yarn or string, fabric, wool, phone or electric cords, and plants. Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) for improving the health of dogs, cats, and other pets

Essential fatty acids (EFAs), abundant in fish and flax oil,  are reponsible for basic cellular health in all body tissues and are fundamentally important for all animals. Researchers now consider EFAs to be as vital to our health and our pets' health as vitamins and minerals. A dog or cat’s immune system functions the same as humans. EFAs play a major role in the maintenance of healthy coat and skin for cats, dogs, and horses. Without essential fatty acids in our diets, cells can not be formed or function efficiently. Like humans, animals also use EFAs to produce hormone-like substances called eicosanoids, which are involved in many important biological functions in the body. Pet deaths prompt recall of pet food  March 16 '07 - A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths. An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall.
