Juliette de Bairacli Levy - A champion for natural
health and well being of animals and children
"Juliette de Bairacli Levy has experienced eight decades of living
a life dedicated to the "natural rearing" of her children and animals.
She speaks the wisdom we long for, the knowledge of good health and a long
happy life that is our right. Yet, somehow these details got lost, buried
or ignored by the "scientific" community. Juliette is a champion of the
health and loving treatment of cats, dogs, children, bees, and the gypsies.
Her presence is a gently formidable figure in our modern world." Gail

- Big Pharma has successfully completed its takeover of veterinary medicine
in the United States and other first-world nations. Knowing that massive
profits could be generated through the bodies of pets, drug companies have
spent two decades pursuing an aggressive campaign of rewriting vet school
curricula, influencing veterinarians and brainwashing pet owners into thinking
their dogs, cats and horses need drugs in order to be healthy. It was an
easy sell: Most consumers already demonstrate a cult-like belief in pharmaceutical
medicine thanks to a barrage of direct-to-consumer advertising funded by
deep-pocketed drug companies, and it was only a minor shift to get them
to believe animals need synthetic chemicals in their bodies, too. The result
of all this is that our dogs and cats are sicker than ever. Ask any vet
who's been practicing for more than ten years: They've never seen such
an increase in the rate of liver disease, nervous system disorders, cancers
and diabetes. Ever wonder why? It's because pets are being routinely
poisoned
with pet food and pet medicine.
So today, the majority of veterinarians in the United States now practice
chemical-based medicine on pets. At the first sign of any health symptom,
they slap the animal with a prescription for expensive, patented pharmaceuticals.
Arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and even depression are now
being treated with dangerous prescription medications. Earlier this year,
the FDA gave approval for Prozac, a powerful mind-altering drug, to be
prescribed to dogs, and many of the most common drugs for people are now
routinely used in pets (including chemotherapy drugs for cancer treatment).

Introduction to Juliette de Bairacli-Levy
by: William Winter DVM
Excerpt:
I had been practicing several years myself all the while feeling like
something was missing but yet I did not know what it was. One day
I stumbled upon a small book on the shelf belonging to the retiring older
veterinarian for whom I was helping out. It looked dusty and wanting
of reading so I took it home with me. To this day I have not returned that
book.
As
I gazed upon the pages, concepts, ideas and words began to come alive for
me. I knew immediately that I had stumbled upon what I will call "The Truth".
My life has never been the same, I have never been able to practice, even
for a day, in the old mind-set that I had been given in veterinary school.
The words in the book come burning back to me just like it was yesterday.
It was over 20 years ago and the book was "The Herbal
Book for the Dog- A Complete Handbook of Natural Care and Rearing".
It was written originally in 1947 and reprinted in 1961 by Juliette Levy.
Little did I know then that not only was this remarkable woman still alive,
but I would actually journey to meet her and we would come to be great
friends. But now I am getting ahead of the story.
Following my great success recommending raw natural diets, I began to
explore other aspects of Ms. Levy's Natural Rearing. I explored FASTING.
To this day I do not believe that I have ever discovered a healing technique
quite as powerful. I have recommended fasting for 10,000 to 20,000
animals and have seen true miracles over these years of practice. Ms. Levy
says it is one of the TWO MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF NATURAL REARING.
The other being a raw diet. It can be said that I will start every
chronic patient on a fast and begin recommending fasting for all animals
beginning at about one year of age. I have now learned to predict
and outline all the "CLEANSING" results clients will see. Yes, by
the way, I do fast myself and I recommend that you do too.
I should say that Ms. Levy truly lives her work too. She eats a raw
organic diet and fasts regularly. She and her two children are living examples
of this life work. Once again, I am getting ahead of the story. (more
about therapeutic fasting and cleansing)
My next exploration was in the realm of HERBAL MEDICINE. And I
focused on the most basic, most intrinsic aspect of healing with herbs,
that of CLEANSING, PURIFYING, DETOXIFICATION HERBS. in this matter,
the work you will read about here is stunning. One must simply try this
to believe it, but I will still go ahead and try to explain what
happens when patients are cleansed. It doesnºt even matter what
the age is! I have seen puppies and kittens go through amazing amounts
of mucus removal and other symptoms because of what they were born with
from their parent's lifestyle. Before long, it could be said that
I began ALL CHRONIC DISEASE PATIENTS with a fast, then a treatment with
cleansing herbs. And I did say ALL chronic patients.
We will talk further about the source and type of cleansing herbs, but
one can use the simple formula of soaked SENNA seeds in water consumed
orally or utilize a N.R. ("Natural Rearing, or N.R. is frequently used
in the books and lectures by Ms. Levy to describe the programs she recommends)
approved formula of cleansing herbs. Over 20 years ago I stumbled
upon GENTLE DRAGON Herbal Cleansing Formula for Animals (Natural
Animal Herbals) and have subsequently sold thousands of boxes of it.
And, yes, I have taken it myself, with great results, thank you)
This cleansing is one of the great gifts I have learned from Ms. Levy's
healing program. My practice would suffer greatly from the loss of
this concept. (more about the healing power of herbs)
Another sort of miracle that occurred from my exposure to this work
was my conversion to using herbs instead of steroids, antibiotics and other
drugs when treating the very common ailment, FELINE
UROLOGICAL SYNDROME (I refuse to use any newer acronyms because the
current thinking doesn't seem to have evolved any more since the old acronym
was in vogue). I began exploring the simple herbs listed by Ms. Levy
to great effect, then I discovered a commercial product of a similar nature
HERBAL DIURETIC (Made by Nutrition Dynamics). It is produced for humans
with cystitis/vaginitis. When I first started using the product it
was called "URINARY ANTISEPTIC" for it really is, but the F.D.A.
did not want people to be curing themselves so they made them change the
name. It still works very nicely.
Over the years, I began to pull this herb and that herb out of the book,
such as the wonderful use of RAW CUCUMBER JUICE topically for CONJUNCTIVITIS,
the use of *GARLIC internally and externally
for ALL TYPES OF PARASITES. I began to use herbal immune tonics,
heart tonics, liver cleansers and arthritis herbs. Each year
I picked herbs like fruit from a great bearing fruit tree. Whatever
I wanted the tree seemed to have for me. All my instincts told me
I had stumbled upon the Great Cornucopia of Cure.
Juliette de Bairacli Levy says that the two most important
aspects of natural animal rearing are:
fasting and raw diet.
"Often the first indication of sickness is that an animal goes off its
food - an observation that has led many traditional herbalists to conclude
that fasting is a natural and beneficial response to sickness... This lack
of appetite can be an effective way of speeding recovery. Bacteria need
iron, and the body makes many adjustments to reduce the availability of
iron during an infection. If an animal keeps eating, any iron in its food
also feeds the pathogens, so force-feeding a sick animal or patient can
be counterproductive. Fever reduces appetite, so if a fever is artificially
suppressed with drugs and appetite returns, not only do we lower temperature
but the increased iron intake can keep the infection going longer. The
traditional dictum 'Starve a fever' is medically sound advice." Cindy
Engel "Wild Health"
"A sick animal retires to a secluded place and fasts until tis body
is restored to mormal. During the fast it partakes only of water and the
medicinal herbs which inherited intelligence teaches it instinctively to
seek" Juliette de Bairacli Levy
Parasites
Infections in Humans and Pets: Symptoms and Natural Treatment Native Americans knew that
humans are plagued by parasites. Other native peoples, from the Arctic
to the Antarctic, also knew that humans, like animals, have parasites.
Parasitic infections arise from the intrusion worms that live in the intestinal
tract of the body. Worm parasites are more common than most people expect,
and they are listed as The Center for Disease Control's #1 Health Risk.
According to numerous studies, nearly 85% of Americans have parasites in
their bodies.
Garlic:
The Great Protector Garlic is an amazing herbal
supplement that helps with so many things. Research shows garlic contains
compounds that can help prevent and cure infections, certain types of cancers
including, stomach, skin, breast, esophageal, oral, and colon, reduce the
bodies stress from pollution, enhance the immune system, lower blood pressure
and cholesterol, arthritis, asthma, circulatory problems, colds and flu,
digestive disorders, insomnia, liver disease, sinusitis, and ulcers. Garlic
is good for virtually any disease or infection.
With information on cats as well as dogs, this guide covers rearing
of young, treating specific diseases with herbs, and a general discussion
on disease prevention.
"If Only I Had Had This Book Before Vaccines Killed My Dog, . Yes -
vaccines took my Newfoundland's life. She was only two and they destroyed
her immune system. But her death has led me down the path to such vitally
important people as Wendy Volhard (her clinically tested diet is based
on Juliette's work) and Juliette Levy. Juliette's books have given me a
deeper understanding of the true power of diet. Diet IS powerful medicine
- absolutely no doubt about that. That Juliette has put these cures and
ways of life into print is a blessing for all of us." Bethanne
Elion, Northern California Coast, USA.
"Meat should be raw. Cooking destroys enzymes and denatures the proteins
rendering them less digestible to cats and dogs. Feeding chunks of meat
lets your pet exercise jaw muscles, form saliva and enzymes in the stomach
(most animals swallow their food relatively whole) needed to digest food
properly. Ground meat is passable for most animals, occasionally, but Juliette
de Bairacli Levy said that "minced meat is lethal to animals" and we find
in practice that some animals just do not seem to be healthy until on chunks
of raw meat." Christina Chambreau DVM - more
about enzymes and animal health
About prey eating (pp 15-16):
"In the wild, hair and underskin are part of a natural flesh diet and
supply essential roughage to exercise the strong muscles of the digestive
tract, acting also as a mild laxative....Animals in the wild, after tearing
off some outer skin and flesh of their victims, unfailingly show a preference
for certain organs of the body: first the intestines, then the eyes. The
intestines supply a good source of demi-digested starch and green herbage....
The other chose organs are the eyes, which animals gouge out with great
eagerness. (Seagulls, which are partly carnivorous, always greedily seek
the eyes of drowned bodies, animal or human.) It is no doubt some mineral
salts which attract the carnivorous animals, phosphorus and iodine normally
being present in the eye tissue. Dr Weston A. Price.... states: '.... they
know that the tissues forming the back part of the eye are good for food.
Science has recently demonstrated that the retina of the eye is one of
the rich sources of vitamin A.'.."
About eggs (p 38):
"Eggs from hens, ducks, or turtles are a rich source of mineral salts
and vitamins.... Eggs must be fresh, as staleness renders them indigestible.
They should be fed raw, because cooking causes them to adhere to the digestive
tract.... Eggs are quite a natural food to the dog, for dogs will seek
out and eat the eggs of sea-birds and other birds, such as game-birds,
which lay their eggs on the ground. Eggs are very *unsuitable* food for
sick animals because of their highly fermentative properties. During the
heat of fever, for instance, they rapidly poison the body instead of strengthening
it. Egg-and-milk has long been the most misguided of orthodox medical-recommended
invalid foods; the giving of such food has done about as much to spoil
cures by orthodox treatment as has the popular use of the destructive sulphonamide
group of drugs. It is claimed that raw egg-white harms health: I do not
agree. Egg-stealers, such as foxes, weasels, cats and rats keep very well,
thank you!"

A beautiful lyrical portrait of the life and work of Juliette de Bairacli
Levy: herbalist, author, breeder of Afghan hounds, friend of the Gypsies,
traveller in search of herbal wisdom and the pioneer of holistic veterinary
medicine. Her well-loved and now classic herbal remedies for animals and
for children have been a vital inspiration to the present day herbal renaissance
and holistic animal care community. For more than 60 years Juliette lived
with the Gypsies, nomads and peasants of the world, learning the healing
arts of these people who live close to nature, and learning from nature
herself. Now 85 years of age, Juliette's life story is as colourful and
exciting as her tremendous wealth of herbal knowledge. Filmed on location
in many beautiful countries, and interwoven with Juliette's vast collection
of archival photographs, together with scenes of Gypsies dancing and Bedouins
with their herds.
"This is an amazing story of a truly remarkable woman, Juliette de Bairacli
Levy, and her journey from everyday to extraordinary. A woman, quiet and
loving in nature, who learns the way of herbs and their curative powers
to help animals, children and humanity. Her story is an inspiration to
all of us in making a life choice and how one person with deep convictions
can make a real difference in the world, even today. Learn and be inspired!"
A woman,
a film, a phenomenon "If the title of Tish Streeten’s powerful new
film sounds like a portrait of a saint, that’s because, in a way, it is.
Juliette of the Herbs captures the life and work of Juliette de Bairacli
Levy, the legendary herbal healer, gypsy scholar, and powerful friend to
all living things. She has performed miracles, saving countless lives of
both human and animal. She’s written the bible for animal lovers and herbalists.
Rosemary Gladstar calls her the single person who’s had the most influence
on American herbalism. There is something magical perhaps supernatural
is the term about this remarkable woman.
In Juliette of the Herbs, you’ll hear the voices of animals and birds
in the gypsy music. You’ll see Juliette swimming in healing waters, and
you’ll meet her animal friends. And you’ll get the feeling you are sitting
down with an incredible woman, having the most important conversation of
your life." excerpt
from Organic Valley
Fresh or dried herbs can be used. Wormwood two handfuls, Rue one handful,
Rosemary a half handful. If the herbs are very dry, less can be used. Pound
up the herbs to near powder form, after first finely cutting with scissors.
A mortar and pestle is the best method for pounding herbs finely. Put herbs
into a wide- mouth quart jar. Then fill, almost to the top, with a thin
oil such as sunflower, safflower or corn. Add one tablespoon natural vinegar
(to break down the cellulose of the herbs). Do not use olive oil as it
is too heavy.
Close the jar tightly and place in sunlight for sun infusion. Preferably
the jar should stand on a substance which heats, such as stone, or buried
in sand. Never strain the oil: the herbs in the jar will sink to the bottom
and when the oil is ready for use, the clear oil can be poured off from
the herb residue. Shake well morning and night. Maturity usually takes
about one month ln temperate climates; in hot climates where the oil heats
up very strongly, less time is required.
If hot sunlight is not available, then fire heat must be used, and heated
in covered cans (double boiler works well). Heat slowly for approximately
an hour. Shake well. Repeat the process daily for one week, by which time
the oil should be ready for bottling.
The test for readiness of the repellent is its bitterness: this should
be intense. To make a double or triple strength oil against the very vicious
types of mosquitoes and other biting pests, the strained oil should be
reinfused by adding more of the finely cut herbs, and a new infusing of
the herbs made two or three times, thus increasing the strength of the
oil many times.
The matured oil requires two further additions to enable it to become
a truly excellent repellent. Into each 3.5 ounces is added half a teaspoon
of spirit of oil of eucalyptus and one teaspoon of castor oil. The latter
makes the repellent heavier and prevents speedy evaporation from the skin.
This herbal remedy acts entirely on the principle of deep skin penetration
and intense bitterness. No biting insect wants to taste such unpleasant
bitterness. It is deeply cleansing and so highly tonic that many women
use it as a facial treatment! The method of application is important. First
shake the bottle well. Then moisten a piece of cotton wool (hygienic cotton)
and then pour some oil on to this. Do not use the cotton dry; it would
become too greasy and also would absorb too much of the oil, and would
not spread the oil lightly as does the dampened cotton. Renew application
after five hours, as the oil will be absorbed.
This book is recommended to educate and enlighten those who have been
brainwashed by the media to think "herbs are drugs", or poisons, or worse-
as it clears up issues of practical usage, and proper usage, and everyday
applications, by someone with decades of experience , well respected the
world over. It contains useful, full descriptions of many common herbs
(the "materia medica"), some not so common, some , in older versions, which
may have fallen out of use or access. A story emerges of herbal use all
over the planet for health care, and along with this information, the author
shares her insights into incorporating natural living to promote robust
health and vitality.
"My grandmother was an immigrant from Russia and with her transition
to this country in the late 1800's came a wealth of knowledge of herbs
and their power to heal. To this day, I still use herbs in the treatment
of many minor health problems from colds, sore throats, insect bites, minor
infections, headaches and symptoms of menopause. "Common Herbs for
Natural Health" brings back memories of my grandmother's garden where fresh
herbs grew abundant, and her kitchen which contained herbs of every description.
Many of the uses for herbs found in this back are generations old; They
are tried and true - they worked then and they work now. That is not to
say, herbs are the solution for every illness. For example, I would never
attempt to treat a serious infection with herbs alone, but they certainly
do have their time and place, as this book will indicate. Herbs can be
an optimum solution to many problems. Since they are a natural source,
they generally have fewer side effects, as long as you know and understand
what herbs not to blend together. They are also less costly than medications
found on a store shelf. This books contains a vast amount of information
on the herbs and suggests which ones to use for various treatments. It
is a book anyone who is a believer in natural health care and healing will
want to own." An amazon.com reviewer
A growing number of veterinarians and animal nutritionists say that
many of our pets' disease and suffering can be prevented or cured with
nutrition. Holistic veterinarians teach that processed pet food (meaning
cooked
food) is the main cause of illness and premature death in the modern dog

pets are prone to suffer from minerals and trace mineral deficiency. For
optimum health, I supplement my animal's diet (and my diet too) with the
following: fulvic minerals and/or marine
phytoplankton (consist of an immense arsenal and array of naturally
occuring powerful phytochemicals, biochemicals, supercharged antioxidants,
free-radical scavengers, super oxide dismutases, nutrients, enzymes, hormones,
amino acids, antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals); bee
pollen (rich in naturally occuring vitamins); kelp
(marine plants to enhance health and detoxify), the
right kind of salt

Yeast in Pets
In the past years we have seen the overuse
of antibiotics in humans and animals, with little regard for the ramifications
of this overuse on the environment of the beneficial bacteria of the gut
(intestinal flora). Candida Albicans a common microorganism that lives
in the gut and when there is an "overgrowth" of this fungus/yeast in the
gut, it is called a systemic yeast infection, and it affects the health
and well being of the whole animal or human. When the dog is on antibiotics
or stressed, the pH balance of the gut is out of balance, and beneficial
bacteria in the gut may be destroyed. This causes this insidious fungus
to take over and this overgrowth is very detrimental to our health and
well being. These are some of the conditions that can alter the pH balance
of the gut.
Antibiotics are necessary at times, but need to be use judiciously,
and at the same time as we are using antibiotics, we need to supplement
Probiotics
(beneficial bacterias) to reestablish the intestinal flora of the gut that
is killed off from antibiotics or lost to stress.

"The main cause of yeast infections, such as Candida Albicans, is from
grain-based foods. Dogs were never meant to eat grains. Their main diet
in the wild is raw meat and vegetation. The only
grains they ever get are already predigested in the stomach or the bowels
of their prey. Cooked foods—anything in a can or a bag, vaccines—which
compromise and destroy the natural immune system, and antibiotics—which
kill the friendly bacteria which would ordinarily fight and overwhelm
the yeast, any other drugs are all additional reasons for seeing such a
preponderance of yeast infections. Symptoms include: chronic ear infections;
incessant licking of the genitals or the paws or both; lick granulomas;
habitual scratching, usually the ears, sides of the torso and underbelly;
rashes, most often on the underbelly; and when the yeast begins to move
into the head; loss of hearing; loss of eyesight; loss of intelligence,
memory and comprehension. Yeast infections always start somewhere in the
digestive system; then move to the genital area or to the ears; then finally
to the brain, taking over the entire body. It is insidious. Very often
these problems are treated with antibiotics or steroids, which only make
matters worse."

Candida albicans is a yeast-like fungus that normally lives in healthy
balance in the body, found mostly in the intestines, genital tract, mouth,
and throat. When the balance is upset, infection results. This is known
as Candidiasis and the fungus travels to all parts of the body through
the bloodstream. Safe

* Overuse of antibiotics
- Killing off of the good bacteria in the gut
* Poor quality diet
* Feeding a diet that is not
meat based (meat should be first ingredient).
* Feeding a grain based diet (grains are first ingredient).
* No probiotics
(friendly
yogurt-type bacteria) used when on antibiotics
* No probiotics (friendly yogurt-type bacteria)
on commercial foods or given daily.
* No digestive
enzymes on the food or given in the diet daily
* No dietary
enzymes present to cleans the toxins from the body
* Poor quality unusable minerals (minerals
run the body’s electrical system).
Other Factors:
* Over vaccinations (see
Purdue Vaccine Study)
* Multivalent vaccines - use of combination vaccines
* Thyroid problems
/Endocrine - metabolic problems (the body's electrical system)
* Stress (seasons, whelping, lactation, vaccines)
* Stress (environmental, genetic, physical, emotional
etc.)
* Anxiousness (males when bitches are in seasons)
* High strung hyperactive dogs
* Death/loss
* Change in environment - weather/hot, cold
* Change in home or home environment
* Boarding
* Compromised Immune System - antibiotics, drugs,
inbreeding, stress in all forms
* Illness that compromises the immune system
* Sensitivity to stimulus (light, sounds, movements)
* Travel (showing)
* Medications
* Flea preparations * Heartworm medications * Toxic Gut Syndrome- pathogenic bacteria overgrowth
The results of this yeast/fungus overgrowth manifests itself in external
and internal expressions of disease. Based on clinical and research studies,
Candida overgrowth in your intestines may create what has been called as
"Leaky Gut Syndrome". Toxins and food allergens may pass through this membrane
and go to other parts of the body, making one feel generally sick all over.
Since antibiotics don’t destroy fungus/yeast, they keep on multiplying
and making more yeast, which in turn, puts out more toxins and weakens
the immune system. It is a vicious cycle. learn

Michael Dym, VMD - "Over the past 40 years and 17 generations
of dogs and, cats we are seeing tremendous increases in chronic ill health
in our pets that was rare back in the early 1960's. Most of these illnesses
revolve around breakdown in our pets' immune systems, and include chronic
skin/ear allergies, digestive upset, thyroid/adrenal/pancreatic disorders,
seizures, gum/ teeth problems, degenerative arthritis, kidney/liver failure,
and cancer across all ages and breeds. We are also seeing a record number
of behavioral and emotional disorders including alarming and unexplained
fears/aggression., as well as difficulty focusing/training and paying attention.
The analogy of these compared with escalating immune/behavioral diseases
in children is quite disturbing. The two biggest factors in our pets' population
health decline over these generations has been the severe overuse
of multiple vaccines and nutrient poor and toxin
filled commercial pet foods. We have also failed to address the underlying
cause of disease by only sup pressing symptoms with antibiotics,
cortisone
and related drugs, so the disease progresses and goes deeper. Homeopathy
offers a viable alternative in truly curing pets and making their bodies
healthier."
Recent studies have shown processed foods to be a factor in increasing
numbers of pets suffering from cancer, arthritis,
obesity, dental disease and heart disease. Dull or unhealthy coats
are a common problem with cats and dogs and poor diet is usually the cause,
according to many veterinarians and breeders. "Dogs, cats and other animals
live for years on foods that come out of bags, cans and boxes. But do these
foods promote health? If they did, our companion animals would enjoy long,
happy lives free of arthritis, hip dysplasia, eye problems, ear problems,
fleas and other parasites, gum disease, lick granulomas, thyroid imbalances,
skin and coat problems, personality disorders, birth defects, breeding
problems, diabetes, cancer and other major and minor illnesses. Before
World War II, most North Americans fed their pets raw bones and table scraps.
Today, everyone uses convenience foods, and pet food companies are industry
giants. Diet isn't the only thing that has changed. So has life expectancy,
with the life span of many breeds now less than half what it was two or
three decades ago. Skin and coat problems are so common that we accept
them as unavoidable, and today's vets routinely treat conditions that used
to be unusual or even rare."
William
Pollak D.V.M.
Dr Wendell O. Belfield, D.V.M. - "Their pets may have
diarrhoea, increased flatulence, a dull hair coat, intermittent vomiting
or prolonged scratching. These are common symptoms associated with commercial
pet foods." In 1981, as Martin Zucker and I wrote How to Have a Healthier
Dog, we discovered the full extent of negative effects that commercial
pet food has on animals. In February 1990, San Francisco Chronicle staff
writer John Eckhouse went even further with an exposé entitled "How
Dogs and Cats Get Recycled into Pet Food".
"In the wild, no one cooks for the coyote or wolf; no one brushes their
teeth. Their foods are raw and unprocessed." William
Pollak D.V.M.
Dr Wendell O. Belfield, D.V.M. - "Rendering plants process decomposing
animal carcasses, large roadkill and euthanised dogs and cats into a dry
protein product that is sold to the pet food industry. One small plant
in Quebec, Ontario, renders 10 tons (22,000 pounds) of dogs and cats per
week. The Quebec Ministry of Agriculture states that "the fur is not removed
from dogs and cats" and that "dead animals are cooked together with viscera,
bones and fat at 115° C (235° F) for 20 minutes".
Holistic Animal Health and Optimum Pet Nutrition A growing number of veterinarians state that processed pet food is
the main cause of illness and premature death in the modern dog and cat.
In December 1995, the British Journal of Small Animal Practice published
a paper contending that processed pet food supresses the immune system
and leads to liver, kidney, heart and other diseases. Dr. Kollath, of the
Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, headed a study done on animals. When
young animals were fed cooked and processed foods they initially appeared
to be healthy. However, as the animals reached adulthood, they began to
age more quickly than normal and also developed chronic degenerative disease
symptoms. A control group of animals raised on raw foods aged less quickly
and were free of degenerative disease. For a return to health, pets require
a diet which strengthens the immune system and most closely resembles that
which they would get in the wild. It's really easy to do. Click

University of Alaska Fairbanks, in cooperation with the UAF research community.
Dr. Sue Ann Bowling is an Associate Professor of Physics at the Institute.
Pity the poor cheetahs! These speedy spotted cats managed to survive
one population crisis, which left them the most inbred wild animal known.
Then human inroads on their habitat and hunting for their fur shoved them
toward a second population crisis, which seemed headed off by captive breeding.
Now it appears that the zoo diet in North America is simultaneously killing
them off with liver disease and preventing them from breeding effectively.
In 1985, 29 American zoo cheetahs died and only 18 were born, and 7
of the 18 died before adulthood. Only about 10% of North American adult
female cheetahs have been producing live cubs in the last 5 years, compared
with 60 to 80 % in other countries.
Since North American cheetahs mostly eat a commercial feline diet based
on horsemeat and soy, while the cheetahs living and breeding more successfully
elsewhere are being fed whole carcasses, a group of researchers in Ohio
decided to look at the zoo cheetah's food. They found that the soybean
part of the diet (the same textured soy protein and soy flakes used increasingly
as a meat extender in human diets) contained natural plant estrogens, chemicals
akin to mammalian female hormones and having some of the same effects.
When these chemicals were injected into immature female mice, they caused
damage to the mice's uteruses.
Experiments were carried out at the zoo as well as in the lab. When
four cheetahs in the Cincinnati Zoo were switched to a diet based on chicken
meat without soy, their liver function improved. Right now we don't know
whether they will breed again or whether permanent damage has occurred.
What does this mean in terms of other soy consumers? Cheetahs are likely
to be exceptionally sensitive to problems of any kind because they are
so inbred. On the other hand, soy made up a relatively small percentage
of the cheetahs' diet, and apparently all cats are rather poor at getting
rid of extra estrogens. Our pets might face some problems.
A quick scan of supermarket dog and cat food labels indicates that about
half of the commercial dry pet foods have soy as the main protein source,
with soy appearing as the first ingredient after corn or (in some very
high protein products such as kitten food) as the first ingredient. As
a dog breeder I would hesitate to maintain my breeding stock on a commercial
diet that used soy as the primary protein source, or listed soy as one
of the top three ingredients. But other questions need to be answered,
as well.
How about the human consumption of soy? At the present time, our western
diets don't contain all that much soy, though what they do contain is often
in the form of textured soy protein, which has over twice the estrogen
content of soy flakes. This in itself indicates that the method of preparing
soy may affect the estrogen content of the final food. Oriental diets have
used soy for far longer than have Western ones. Do traditional Oriental
methods of preparing soybeans for consumption remove some of the plant
estrogens? I asked one of the researchers, and he replied that tofu has
far less plant estrogens per unit weight than does textured soy protein.
No measurements had yet been made, however, based on the ratio of estrogens
to protein.
Agriculturists and plant breeders need to look at soybean estrogens,
too. Do drought, temperature, soil fertility or day length affect their
concentration? Do different varieties of soybeans differ in how much of
these substances the beans contain? Can low-estrogen varieties be developed?
The cheetah study has raised more questions than it has answered --
not an uncommon result of scientific research! Cheetahs
and Soybeans from the Alaska Science Forum
How about the human consumption of soy? "Dr Fitzpatrick's literature review uncovered evidence that soy consumption
has been linked to numerous disorders, including infertility, increased
cancer and infantile leukemia; and, in studies dating back to the 1950s,
that genistein in soy causes endocrine disruption in animals."
"The soybean contains large quantities of natural toxins or "antinutrients".
First among them are potent enzyme inhibitors that block the action of
trypsin and other enzymes needed for protein digestion. These inhibitors
are large, tightly folded proteins that are not completely deactivated
during ordinary cooking. They can produce serious gastric distress, reduced
protein digestion and chronic deficiencies in amino acid uptake. In test
animals, diets high in trypsin inhibitors cause enlargement and pathological
conditions of the pancreas, including cancer. Soybeans also contain haemagglutinin,
a clot-promoting substance that causes red blood cells to clump together.
Trypsin inhibitors and haemagglutinin are growth inhibitors." Sally

A MUST READ for all veterinarians, and for all pet owners! "We need
to pay attention to what we are feeding our animals. Not only as this book
says, with the food, but also we need to support their immune systems.
In Super Nutrition for Dogs n' Cats extra information is provided on all
the illness caused by malnutrition, mineral and enzyme deficiencies that
we normally don't think of. Ever wonder why there are so many vets?...too
many sick pets because of the food and lack of proper nutrients. Everyone
ought to pay attention!" An amazon.com reviewer.

Juliette de Bairacli Levy has experienced
eight decades of living a life dedicated to the "natural rearing" of her
children and animals. She speaks the wisdom we long for, the knowledge
of good health and a long happy life that is our right. Yet, somehow these
details got lost, buried or ignored by the "scientific" community. Juliette
is a champion of the health and loving treatment of cats, dogs, children,
bees, and the gypsies. Her presence is a gently formidable figure in our
modern world. Juliette says that the two most important aspects of natural
animal rearing are:
fasting and raw diet. learn

Optimum Pet Nutrition "The results of a clinical trial suggest that 74.7% of common diseases
in dogs and 63% of common diseases in cats can be eliminated without medical
intervention over a period of one year with proper diet modifications and
an understanding of the healing process as exhibited through healing episodes.
Approaching disease from the perspective of health is the most powerful
means of eliminating disease. Poor fuel makes for little momentum in life.
The commercial food we are feeding' is the disease we are treating---so
treat on and on, curing one disease after another, again and again." William

Recipes of Home Made Rawfood Diet for Animals Your dog’s behavior, happiness, health, longevity and overall well-being
are inextricably intertwined with what you feed him. Dogs, just like everyone
else, have specific nutritional needs. And, not to complicate matters,
the needs of individual dogs
Domesticated animals (including ferrets and rodents) suffer from minerals
and vitamin deficiency - Our soil, plants, and especially
commercial foods are woefully deficient in key nutrients. Scientists
theorize that mineral deficiency subjects us, and our animals, to
more diseases, aging, sickness and destruction of our physical well-being
than any other factor in personal health. Domesticated ferrets, like our
domesticated dogs and cats, are prone to suffer from minerals and trace
mineral deficiency which makes them prone to diseases. A good source of
naturally occuring trace minerals and vitamins for ferrets and other pets
are:
Marine
Phytoplankton Dr. Jerry Tennant, M.D. says that marine phytoplankton
contains almost everything one needs to sustain life and to restore health
by providing the raw materials to make new cells that function normally.
Marine phytoplankton has been called "the most nutritionally dense foods
on the planet". Containing a wide range of trace elements, amino acids,
vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll, enzymes and cellular materials, marine
phytoplankton promotes and maintains optimum health by boosting and supporting
all systems within the body.
Seaweed
(kelp). Sea Vegetables (Spirulina - Kelp - Chlorella) have been
acknowledged as a detoxifyer, a balanced nourishment and a miraculous healing
plant. Ocean / Sea algae are the richest natural source of minerals, trace
minerals and rear earth elements.
Fulvic
minerals consist of an immense arsenal and array of naturally occuring
powerful phytochemicals, biochemicals, supercharged antioxidants, free-radical
scavengers, super oxide dismutases, nutrients, enzymes, hormones, amino
acids, antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals
Bee Pollen
contains all the essential components of life. The percentage of rejuvenating
elements in bee pollen remarkably exceeds those present in brewer's yeast
and wheat germ. Bee pollen corrects the deficient or unbalanced nutrition,
common in the customs of our present-day civilization of consuming incomplete
foods.
Flaxoil:
holistic veterinarians are beginning to recommend to their clients that
they supplement their animals diet with a daily dose of flaxseed oil and
other nutrients for optimum health and vitality. The vets are finding remarkable
results in clearing up skin conditions, relieving arthritic and inflammatory
pain, as well as improved over all pet health. (Suzie
Zeeman gives flaxoil to her ferrets. She says that their fur
looks shinny and thick, and feels soft and smooth since on flaxoil."
Transfer
Factor Plus - Canine and Feline Formulas are advanced immune support
supplements formulated or dogs and cats (also good for ferrets).
According to veterinarians, the powerful and proprietary blend of ingredients
work together to activate and enhance the immune system's ability
to respond to the many pathogens may pets come into contact with. more
Barley
Dog is the original "green" supplement made from the juice of organic
Barley grass with a hickory smoked flavor. It provides active enzymes,
vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, amino acids, chlorophyll, proteins and
essential trace minerals. Regular use can promote healthy skin and coat,
reduce bad breath, improve digestion and restore energy levels.
Dr. Charles W. Brown, DVM - "A groundswell of nutrition conscious
veterinarians are beginning to recommend to their clients that they supplement
their animals diet with a daily dose of flaxseed
oil and other important nutrients. When the diets of animals were fortified
with flax, within three weeks their coats developed a beautiful sheen,
and dandruff was greatly diminished. There are amazing testimonials about
animals recovering from cancer, diabetes and other severe degenerative
illnesses with a nutritional product called Transfer Factor.
"My
colleagues and I have found this product (transfer factor) to be very effective
in modulating the immune system. Transfer factor is a "soup" of immune-modulating
factors, which contains a leukocyte-type molecule that can passively transfer
immunity from one mammal to another by stimulating cell-mediated immunity
and is antigen specific. Richard Bennett, Ph.D., an Infectious Disease
Microbiologist and Immunologist from the University of California, Davis
School of Veterinary Medicine, believes this could be the most significant
development in animal health care in decades. We have a great number of
veterinarians and clients who are experiencing very positive results in
a broad area of disorders, including periodontal. "more
Frustrated with the Failures
of Conventional Veterinary Medicine:
"After 10 years of traditional
veterinary practice I became tired of having no treatment for chronic disease,
incurable conditions, and a plethora of allergic maladies which seem to
plague all veterinary practices. I was frustrated with giving animals cortisone
because I had no other solutions, or using antibiotics for infections which
I knew were of viral origin."

Homeopathy
for Animals:
Why use barbiturates for pain relief Why let an Animal
Suffer? A growing number of veterinarians are turning to homeopathic veterinary
medicine as a safe and effective alternative to conventional veterinary
practice.
Note
from Shirley: I am not a doctor, a nurse or a veterinarian, but I am
fortunate to have the knowledge of natural medicine. I studied homeopathy
and herbal remedies in my spare time at home for several years. When a
member of my family is sick or injured, I treat them at home with great
success and avoid conventional medical intervention.
When
my dog Shasta is sick or injured, I try to protect her from stress and
anxiety and I avoid taking her to a vet. I have witnessed the amazing healing
power of
homeopathy and
herbal
extracts in traumatic emergency situations and in acute and chronic
disease with my dog Shasta. Some of the healings, which took place, were
nothing short of miraculous.
I personally experienced
the incredible healing power of homeopathy in 1981 after I had been chronically
sick for years and was addicted to prescription and over the counter
drugs. Unfortunately, instead of generating a cure, the medications (steroids,
antibiotics, antihistamine, etc.) merely temporarily suppressed my symptoms,
weakened my immune system, and in the long run made me sicker. When I received
homeopathic treatment from a professional experienced homeopath my health
had an amazing turn around. In time I experienced a dramatic and permanent
cure of all my symptoms. Blown away, I bought dozens of homeopathic books,
subscribed to homeopathic journals and started to study homeopathy at home
for the next several years. I'm not a doctor or a nurse, but when a member
of my family get sick or injured (including my dog) I immediately use homeopathic
medicine, always with great success, and avoid seeing a conventional doctor
or veterinarian. You can read my

how
I saved my dog's life with homeopathy and raw food. I also have a record
of acute illness and traumas that Shasta experienced over the years
and how I treated her at home without veterinarian medical intervention.
One of the most amazing experience was when Shasta experienced at stroke
with paralysis at age 11. I refused to take her to the vet which
I knew was going to be very stressful on her emotionally. My husband thought
that this was the end for Shasta and talked about "putting her down". With
homeopathy, herbal extract and energy healing she recovered rapidly and
fully. read the story
SICK
OF DRUGGING YOUR PET?
Dr Charles E Loops DVM - "After
10 years of traditional veterinary practice I became tired of having no
treatment for chronic disease, incurable conditions, and a plethora of
allergic maladies which seem to plague all veterinary practices. I was
frustrated with giving animals cortisone because I had no other solutions,
or using antibiotics for infections which I knew were of viral origin.
There is so much that can be done for an animal, bird, or reptile that
is ailing by utilizing homeopathic medicine."
For years dog health supplies have included toxic materials to artificially
maintain dog health as a temporary measure. The time has come to change
to a more natural approach toward animal health. Natural remedies have
been shown to achieve more immediate, more complete and longer lasting
health, vitality, quality and longevity of animal lives. Learn about herbal
remedies and other safe alternatives to drugs, chemo, radiation and surgery
Homeopathy
offers a viable alternative in truly curing pets and making their bodies
healthier."
Will Falconer, DVM - "Most of the chronic diseases we commonly
see in animals (and humans) have an immune basis, e.g. diabetes, allergies,
asthma, thyroid disease, inflammatory bowel diseases, repeated ear infections,
cancer, etc. While they can be cured through the careful use of homeopathy,
the road to cure can be a long one -- often years if the animal has had
years of disease. Transfer factors can significantly shorten the course,
by giving a much needed balancing effect to the immune system. If the immune
system is overactive as in allergies, ear infections, asthma, diabetes,
or hypothyroidism, Transfer Factor can balance this overactivity so the
system is not attacking its own organs, overreacting to things that shouldn’t
be perceived as a threat. If, conversely, the immune system is under-active
as in mange, parasites, viral infections, or cancer, Transfer
Factor Plus can clearly stimulate it to better meet the challenges
it needs to be alert to." Prevaccination
Protection Dr. Falconer D.V.M. explains how to protect your animal
from vaccines damage
Sam Jones, DVM - "Two cats, both about 8 years old, had severe
diabetes. It was impossible to get the insulin requirements adjusted. They
had lost weight to a point that they were skin and bones. Both cats had
no quality of life left. After one week of being on transfer
factors; we were able to get their insulin requirements adjusted. It
is now 6 months and they have regained their weight and have a great quality
of life and health."
Just like humans, domesticated animals like dogs and cats are affected
by the health hazards of modern living. Pollution, poor nutrition, stress
and unhealthy lifestyles can lead to a variety of illnesses and conditions
that are very similar to those experienced by humans. These days, emotional
and psychological problems like depression, anxiety, ADHD and behavioral
problems are just as prevalent in pets as they are in their owners.
Similarly, physical ailments such as diabetes,
arthritis, chronic fatigue, digestive disorders, cystitis, kidney and liver
disease, skin disorders, obesity, thyroid dysfunction and other problems
are becoming more and more common in domesticated animals. Many, if not
most of these conditions can be prevented by helping your pets to live
a healthier lifestyle. For pets already suffering from existing conditions,
a combination of lifestyle changes and natural medicine can work wonders!

CHLORINATED and FLUORIDATED WATER.... A BIG NO-NO
!!! There is a perception among many people that bottled water
is somehow more healthy or pure than water from their tap. This is simply
an illusion of marketing. A four-year study by the National Resources Defense
Council (NRDC), released in 1999, found that one-fifth of the sampled bottled
waters contained known neurotoxins and carcinogens such as styrene, toluene
and xylene. Another NRDC study found that, out of 103 brands of bottled
water, one-third contained traces of arsenic and E. coli. This means that
out of a sample of 1,000 bottles sold in the U.S., at least 300 would have
some level of chemical contamination. It is well known that the average
city water today contains over 500 chemicals that do not belong in it.
Part of this is due to the fact that most delivery systems in the U.S.
include cement, asbestos pipes, cast iron, PVC (porous to certain solvents,
herbicides and pesticides) and that lead, cadmium and other toxic metals
leach out of valves and couplings of pipes between a water treatment plant
and a faucet in the home. Why Purified
and Distilled Bottled Water are Bad For You and Your Animals
Safe,
toxin-free, Ionized,
Energized, Drinking Water helps to naturally flush toxins and acidic
waste from the body and is a powerful antioxidant. Ionized Water makes
more oxygen available to our cells than distilled, reverse osmosis, filtered
only, bottled or tap water and is the best possible drinking water. "Disease
and early death is more likely to be seen with the long term drinking of
purified water. Avoid it except in special circumstances." Zoltan P.

Clay is renowned to have many uses in promoting health in plants, animals
and humans. Bentonite, Pascalite, as well as other types of healing clays,
have been used by indigenous cultures since before recorded history. According
to Knishinsky, benefits reported by people using liquid clay for a period
of two to four weeks include: improved intestinal regularity; relief from
chronic constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, and ulcers; a surge in physical
energy; clearer complexion; brighter, whiter eyes; enhanced alertness;
emotional uplift; improved tissue and gum repair; and increased resistance
to infections. Clay works on the entire organism. No part of the body is
left untouched by its healing energies, he notes. (Pascalite clay is renowned
for its natural antibiotic properties) learn more about
