Why
Do Dogs Eat Poop?
---- Animal
Nutrition: Are You Really Meeting Your Animal´s Nutritional Needs?
Cindy Engles, Ph.D
- "Eating feces (coprophagy) is one
way animals such as gorillas, elephants, rabbits, and hares add to their
supply of essential bacteria through adult life. It is therefore an important
aspect of their health care." Cindy
Engles, Ph.D., is the author of Wild Health: How Animals
Keep Themselves Well and What We Can Learn From Them
According
to Dr. Donald R. Collins DVM, dogs will eat anything they can get
their paws on if they are lacking in the nutrition to supply them
with adequate energy. Dr. Collins states in his writing, "If there are
insufficient amounts of nutrients in the food to furnish all of the
calories a dog needs, then the dog will not gain weight and will remain
hungry all of the time. It will eat almost anything, including dead animals,
feces, carrion or garbage to fill the hollow feeling within its belly."
To help ensure a wholesome diet with the appropriate nutrients avoid diets
that are made of inferior ingredients or is made using high heat for processing
and choose a diet for your friend that is comprised of human quality whole
food ingredients.
Dr. Francis M. Pottenger's nutritional studies have shown that a regular
diet of cooked or canned foods causes the development of chronic degenerative
diseases and premature mortality. Professor Jackson of the Dept. of Anatomy,
University of Minnesota, has shown that rats fed for 135 days on an 80
percent cooked food diet resulted in an increase pancreatic weight of 20
to 30 percent. What this means is that the pancreas is forced to work harder
with a cooked food diet. "Although the body can manufacture enzymes,
the more you use your enzyme potential, the faster it is going to run out..."
wrote Dr. Edward Howell, who pioneered research in the benefits of food
enzymes. Enzymes
in raw food for your animal's optimum health
Alicia McWatters, Ph.D.,
C.N.C - "Fresh, raw foods contain the highest
level of enzymes and these enzymes assist in digestion. Cooked foods
and dry convenient diets have been denatured and are devoid of enzymes:
life-promoting elements. While they may maintain life they do not promote
optimum health or longevity! Food enzymes are very sensitive and are easily
destroyed by low moist heat (105-118 degrees F). Dry heat around 150 degrees
F. Internal enzymes are damaged by factors, such as chlorine in drinking
water, certain medicines, air pollution and chemical additives."
What
is Pica?
Pica is the act of eating non-food items.
In less serious cases, cats may chew or suck on objects, but not actually
swallow them. Common targets include yarn or string, fabric, wool, phone
or electric cords, and plants. Any object may be a potential target, however.
Holistic veterinarians believe that cats exhibit pica behavior because
our soil, plants, and especially commercial foods are woefully deficient
in key nutrients. Scientists theorize that
mineral deficiency subjects us, and our animals, to more diseases,
aging, sickness and destruction of our physical well-being than any other
factor in personal health. A groundswell of nutrition conscious veterinarians
are beginning to recommend to their clients that they supplement their
animals diet with a daily dose of flaxseed oil,
coconut
oil and other nutrients for optimum health and vitality. The food your
animal eats should provide all of the nutritional components which are
necessary for all organs and systems of a healthy body to perform in harmonious
unison. A properly functioning body does an amazing job at preventing disease
and healing itself, and to do this it requires the energies and nutrients
of a well-balanced diet. In terms of finding the proper diet for our companions,
this means learning to look beyond our own needs, opinions, and agendas
to address the natural needs of the animals that we caretake.
Pooping all over the house
"We've had terrible problems with all our animals (three cats and a
dog) peeing and pooping where they aren't supposed to, on our hardwood
floors under the table, on chair legs, on beds and in closets, etc. I started
giving all four of them the AFA products, especially
supplementing with enzymes,
probiotics, Super Sprout & Algae and CoQ10, based on what I had
read and heard from our great holistic vets and on the chat list. It has
helped tremendously. I started all this AFTER we took them to the vet and
they couldn't find anything wrong with them, and couldn't even suggest
anything to try! According to the vet, our 10-year-old schnauzer, Walter,
was simply experiencing "doggy Alzheimer's" for instance, and had "forgotten"
that he was housebroken! The CoQ10 seems to have helped him the most, so
maybe he was right. Anyway, it's such a relief and so fantastic to have
something that works!." Sharon

Animal Bad Breath (Halitosis) and Bad Body
Odor
Note
from Shirley: There are a number of causes for bad breath (halitosis)
and bad body odor in animals. Bacteria in unhealthy teeth, stomach
and intestinal disturbances, bowel sluggishness, toxicity and nutrients
deficiency. My 6 y old German Shepherd dog, Kuuma, always had a sweet
smelling
breath and a fresh, clean body odor until he turned 6. Gradually,
I began noticing that he was discharging a bad body odor and his breath
smelled foul too. After doing research, I became convinced that he suffered
from vital nutrients deficiency. I added an ounce of FrequenSea
(rich in nutrients from marine phytoplankton)
to his diet daily, as well as a couple of tablespoons of fulvic
acid trace minerals. Within a few weeks he regained a sweet,
clean breath and body odor and his fur had a new shine! HaliTonic
is a 100% natural remedy used internally to support balance of
enzymes in the mouth and to promote a healthy, fresh mouth, throat and
digestive tract – ensuring that all systems are supported to encourage
fresh breath!
Chia seeds
have done wonders for my dog's health (and for my own health too!).
I mix a good amount of chia seeds with raw eggs or raw meat and keep it
refrigerated for 48 hours before feeding it to my dog to increase its nutritional
content. When Chia seeds, rich in Omega-3 fatty acids are included in your
dog's diet, your can expect to see your dog's overall health to improve
with the energy of a puppy and its coat to become shiny and healthy. Soaking
raw
chia seeds in water, broth, or juice for 24 to 48 hours greatly increase
its nutritional content. Omega-3 oils are essential
nutrients, deficient in most dogs' diets. Omega-3 fatty acids are fundamental
molecules in the structure and activity of the membranes of all cells throughout
your dog's body. They also have highly- specialized functions in neurological
tissues, especially the brain and retina and play an important role in
cell membranes and the formation of new tissue, therefore important for
development and growth. You will love the ease of using Chia seeds and
dogs love the nutty taste! I also enjoy eating chia seeds soaked
in natural raw fruit juice or mixed with a fruit salad. I buy

Wild
Health: How Animals Keep Themselves Well and What We Can Learn From Them
Cindy
Engel, Ph.D., explains that human beings are too much like animals
in captivity in the way we have limited our own healthcare strategies.
Like Native Americans, she advocates, we should observe animal behaviour
as the first step to achieving sustainable healthcare. Everyone should
read this book! It's truly revolutionary and fascinating. It will change
the way you think about animals and yourself. The things animals do to
stay healthy are mind-boggling, and Dr. Engel is always careful to say
what is scientifically proven and what isn't. I've always been suspicious
of Alternative medicine, but it opened my eyes. There are incredible lessons
here for human health as well as animal health, and the book isn't heavy
lifting at all.
In her book, Cindy Engles,
Ph.D. documents:
-
How injured and sick animals
retreat in an isolated place to rest and fast until
healed.
-
Herds of elephants risk injury
and death in a perilous journey to hidden salt caves where they supplement
their sodium deficient diet
-
Why animals eat their
own feces. "Eating feces (coprophagy) is one way animals such as gorillas,
elephants, rabbits, and hares add to their supply of essential bacteria
through adult life. It is therefore an important aspect of their health
care."
-
Many species of mammals, birds,
reptiles, and even insects, in all parts of the world, eat dirt or clay.
Known as geophagy (clay or earth-eating) this habit
has long been assumed to be an attempt to rectify mineral deficiciencies
in their diet.

- "My work animals were most carefully selected and everything was
done to provide them with suitable housing and with fresh green fodder,
silage, and grain, all produced from fertile land. I was naturally intensely
interested in watching the reaction of these well-chosen and well-fed oxen
to diseases like rinderpest, septicaemia, and foot-and-mouth disease which
frequently devastated the countryside. None of my animals were segregated;
none
were inoculated; they frequently came in contact with diseased stock.
As my small farm-yard as Pusa was only separated by a low hedge from one
of the large cattle-sheds on the Pusa estate, in which outbreaks of foot-and-mouth
disease often occurred, I have several time seen my oxen rubbing noses
with foot-and-mouth cases. Nothing happened. The healthy well-fed animals
reacted to this disease exactly as suitable varieties of crops, when properly
grown, did to insect and fungus pest -- no infection took place." Good
nutrition can prevent disease. Good nutrition can cure disease.

Eating
Grass A chimp with a stomach ache may seek out a
broad-spectrum antidote like the bitter-leaf. Or it may swallow whole leaves
from several different kinds of hairy plants: leaves with 'Velcro' hooks
help clear out intestinal worms. Bears before hibernation and snow geese
before migration also turn to Velcro plants. Domestic dogs and cats chew
grass, which has the same scouring effect. Many wild animals, and some
people, develop 'pica' when ill, a craving to eat earth - particularly
clay, which assuages diarrhoea and binds to many plant poisons. Among the
most famous clay-eaters are the parrots of the Amazon. Scarlet macaws,
blue and gold macaws, and hosts of smaller birds perch together in their
hundreds to excavate the best clay layer along a riverbank. Parrots' regular
diet is tree seeds, which the trees defend with toxic chemicals, and clay
is an essential buffer to the toxins.
Dr.
Miller's Holy Tea with Blessed Thistle herb can assist the body in
eliminating waste, toxins and compacted fecal matter from the colon in
a simple, yet effective, easy-to-use but low cost method
Our
pets are prone to suffer from minerals and trace mineral deficiency. For
optimum health, I supplement my animal's diet (and my diet too) with the
following: fulvic minerals and/or marine
phytoplankton (consist of an immense arsenal and array of naturally
occuring powerful phytochemicals, biochemicals, supercharged antioxidants,
free-radical scavengers, super oxide dismutases, nutrients, enzymes, hormones,
amino acids, antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals); bee
pollen (rich in naturally occuring vitamins); kelp
(marine plants to enhance health and detoxify), the
right kind of salt
(not common table salt); clay
(to promote healing and to detoxify) and with flaxoil
(also knows as linseed oil - rich source of omega 3 fatty acids). My animals
do not drink
tap water. I give them only carbon filtered water which
is free from toxic chlorine and fluoride and I add therapeutic clay to
the water. I never cook or warm up food in a microwave
oven. Please read about the Hidden Hazards of
Microwave Cooking

Essential Fatty Acids
(EFAs) for improving the health of dogs, cats, and other pets.
Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are reponsible for basic cellular health
in all body tissues and are fundamentally important for all animals. Researchers
now consider EFAs to be as vital to our health and our pets' health as
vitamins and minerals. A dog or cat’s immune system functions the same
as humans. EFAs play a major role in the maintenance of healthy coat and
skin for cats, dogs, and horses. Without essential fatty acids in our diets,
cells can not be formed or function efficiently. Like humans, animals also
use EFAs to produce hormone-like substances called eicosanoids, which are
involved in many important biological functions in the body. Essential
fatty acids are the building blocks for prostaglandins which work to regulate
hormones, immune and nervous systems plus cardiovascular function. This
is why these fatty acids are called “essential fatty acids” (EFAs).
A groundswell of nutrition conscious veterinarians are beginning to
recommend to their clients that they supplement their animals diet with
a daily dose of fish
oil
or
flaxseed
oil, poured right over the food. Mixing chia seeds
with the dog's food also provide valuable essential fatty acids (omega
3 oil) and other valuable nutrients. The vets are finding remarkable results
in clearing up skin conditions, relieving arthritic and inflammatory pain,
as well as improved over all pet health. Mr. Paul Stitt, while addressing
a scientific conference in North Dakota reported that flax increased bone
strength as well as improved the silkiness and sheen of animals fur. When
the diets of horses were fortified with flax, within three weeks their
coats developed a beautiful sheen, and dandruff was greatly diminished.
Within 9 months cracked hooves were completely healed. When a pregnant
mare was fed flax, her offspring were larger, and grew faster than when
previous to being fed flax.
Further research indicates that horses fed flax and injected with the
deadly organism Escherichia coli were better protected than those not fed
flax, suggesting enhanced immunity in these animals. Select Alaskan sled
dog mushers are fortifying their dogs diets with flax oil as it serves
as a source of valuable energy, keeps less desirable saturated fats mobile
in the blood stream, increases oxygen uptake to the cell, decreases recovery
time from strenuous exercise, and prevents and heals worn and chaffed paws.
Numerous studies conducted on animals and humans show that flax has powerful
anti-tumor properties and may reduce tumor size by 50%.
Dr. Broadhurst explains in a recent issue of Nutrition Science News
that, "because dogs have long coats and an excellent ability to burn fat
for energy, they need five to 10 times as much oil as humans to achieve
measurable clinical improvement." Thus, she recommends the following regimen:
Weeks one through six: one to six tablespoons daily, depending on weight.
(Use one to two tablespoons for dogs less than 20 pounds; use two to four
tablespoons for dogs 20 to 50 pounds; four to six tablespoons for dogs
over 50 pounds.) After six weeks or once improvement is noted, reduce dosage
to one-third to one-half.
Veterinarians recommend that dogs on commercial diet lacking raw
food or enzymes, to take digestive
enzymes to help breakdown the fat in flaxoil (and cottage cheese or
other fat foods) to prevent risk to develop pancreatitis
.

Marine
phytoplankton - Dr. Jerry Tennant, M.D. says that marine phytoplankton
contains almost everything one needs to sustain life and to restore health
by providing the raw materials to make new cells that function normally.
Marine phytoplankton has been called "the most nutritionally dense foods
on the planet". Containing a
wide range of trace elements, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll,
enzymes and cellular materials, marine phytoplankton promotes and maintains
optimum health by boosting and supporting all systems within the body.
Its antioxidants and unique polysaccharides can halt the genetic mutations
that can lead to cancer. Both high levels of saccharides and adaptogens
increase energy and stamina by improving our animal's ability to consume
and use oxygen. Adaptogens also improve cardiovascular health by strengthening
the heart and circulation, and continue to work overtime while your pet
is resting by supporting muscle growth and repair.

From Cliff
Beckwith "I have a 13 year old dog. He has cancer. He's eyes are dull
and he's so weak he can't lift his leg. I should have put him to sleep
but I didn't want to. I put a Tbsp. of flax oil and a half cup of cottage
cheese in his bowl and he wolfed it down. I did that three times a day
for ten weeks. Today he's running all over the place, his eyes are bright,
his coat is shiny and he's gaining weight." That was the 2nd dog I'd heard
of in 3 days that showed improvement from using Flax Seed oil. The other
is owned by my cousin's daughter"

From Tim
Brown: "My dog Shilo, a 3 1/2 years old Golden Retriever, was diagnosed
with Leukemia of the bone marrow. He was diagnosed on March 19, '99 and
the next day I started him on 3 tablespoons of flaxoil and cottage cheese
and within hours his energy improved. Four days later, on March 24th, I
took him back to the vet and they did a blood test and were baffled because
his white cell count was normal, his red blood cells were normal, and his
platelets were clotting normal, he had no fever, and he was acting like
a normal dog and they didn't understand. On April 13th he had another test
and no cancer cells. HE HAS BEEN CANCER FREE SINCE MARCH 24th 1999. Just
think I spent over $2000.0 on vets to find out what he really needed was
a bottle of flax seed oil that costs about $12.00. Before this he was a
very sick dog and according to the vets he was suppose to be dead by now."

Algae and Marine Plants
for Animal's Health
Adding seaweed in the form of Kelp meal to your pet's diet to promote
optimum health. Kelp contains over 60 minerals and elements, 21 amino acids,
simple and complex carbohydrates and several essential plant growth hormones.
Being rich in amino acids, vitamins, minerals and trace elements is one
of the key reasons why kelp is known as a great promoter of glandular health,
especially for the pituitary, adrenal and thyroid glands. Kelp also supplies
a natural source of iodine, which acts as an antibiotic to kill germs.
Since the thyroid and pituitary glands regulate certain functions of digestion,
kelp is beneficial in balancing out humans and animal's total system.

Animals have
benefited from the use of Therapeutic Clay
Animals
are instinctively selective about the types of minerals they will ingest,
shunning sedimentary minerals in favor of mineral deposits formed by igneous
hydrothermal activity. Extensive studies with cattle, horses, pigs, fish,
chickens and other animals have shown that the volume of food intake is
less when mineral supplements are added to the their diet. Additional benefits
are noted as well, for example, increases in butter fat and milk output
are documented from dairy cows. These improvements have been found in all
studies using a specific type of calcium montmorillonite.
It
has helped cows with scours and pneumonia. Veterinarians use it on dogs,
cats, horses, etc... for various afflictions including injuries and infections.
Dr. Quisenberry, from Texas AandM, researched the beneficial effects
of calcium montmorillonite clays when fed to many farm animals including
horses, pigs, chickens, etc. Neva Jensen, a nationally known nutrition
expert, wrote a book on Terramin called "The Healing
Power of Living Clay," explaining how the nutrients in certain clays
are assimilated in our bodies. The US Department of Fish and Wildlife conducted
similar studies on trout fish on the Snake River in Hagerman, Idaho revealing
the same health promoting effects. All of these studies were specific to
Terramin.
Clay is renowned to have many uses in promoting health in plants, animals
and humans. Healing clays, have been used by indigenous cultures since
before recorded history. According to Knishinsky, benefits reported by
people using liquid clay for a period of two to four weeks include: improved
intestinal regularity; relief from chronic constipation, diarrhea, indigestion,
and ulcers; a surge in physical energy; clearer complexion; brighter, whiter
eyes; enhanced alertness; emotional uplift; improved tissue and gum repair;
and increased resistance to infections. Clay works on the entire organism.
No part of the body is left untouched by its healing energies, he notes.
"The eating of clay has been observed in [ native ] peoples and animals
in all parts of the world since antiquity. Early writers described the
widespread use of kanwa ( earth from a lick near Lake Chad ) for animals
and humans in Nigeria. Long journeys were made to [ this ] lick to obtain
a tribal supply of this earth, and it was then issued as rations to cattle
and humans...

Fulvic Minerals are naturally occuring
plant derived minerals and trance elements, vital to maintain opitmum health.
To the science of living cells, fulvic acids are vital in bringing substantial
amounts of nutrients and minerals into water solution and delivering their
living energies to the living cells. Fulvic acid assists every stage of
cellular metabolism and is the most powerful, natural electrolyte known.
It restores electrical balance to damaged cells, neutralizes toxins and
can eliminate food poisoning within minutes.

Veterinary
Success Using Transfer Factors
We all know the importance of an optimal immune system, not only after
surgical procedures or fighting disease and serious illness, but also in
your patient's or pet's everyday wellness. Recent in vitro and in
vivo studies on Transfer Factor Plus documented an increase in Natural
Killer cell activity.by 248% and 269% respectively, over baseline immune
response. The NK cell is the animal's first line of defense against many
pathogens... bacteria, viruses, parasites, and of course malignant tumor
cells.
Baruch Rosen, M.D. wrote a testimonial of the experience he had
with his own dog who came down with distemper: "...Blood studies confirmed
distemper and showed a white cell count (lymphocytes) of only 264 slightly
more than ten percent of normal. Our vet plus a second out-of-state consulting
vet, an expert in distemper were very sympathetic and advised me to prepare
myself to euthanize Romeo. Knowing little to nothing about canine distemper,
I turned to the internet and luckily stumbled on to Transfer
Factor Plus, a preparation which enhances and stimulates the body's
own immune system to fight against all pathogens, viral or otherwise. My
thirty years in medicine told me this was the only solution. I hurriedly
became a distributor to get the product and started Chico and Romeo on
one cap daily encased in one teaspoonful of raw hamburger. Over the
next two weeks all cough and mucus drainage ceased. Romeo's follow-up blood
count had risen to normal range at 2217 and he surprised to whole family
by jumping afive foot wall. He romps and plays all day long with
Chico, now responds normally to his name and appears to be his old joyful
self again" read his full testimonial
Sam Jones, DVM -"Two cats, both about 8 years old, had severe
diabetes. It was impossible to get the insulin requirements adjusted. They
had lost weight to a point that they were skin and bones. Both cats had
no quality of life left. After one week of being on transfer factors we
were able to get their insulin requirements adjusted. It is now 6 months
and they have regained their weight and have a great quality of life and
health."
Steven Slagle, DVM - "Transfer factors and enhanced transfer
factors have turned out to be the most effective and versatile products
I have ever used in my 32-year veterinary practice. Here are a few examples:
A cat with leukemia, an oral tumor, and posterior paralysis due to a spinal
tumor, was very ill and emaciated. One month after enhanced transfer factors
(1 cap daily), there was some regression of the oral tumor, restored appetite
with some weight gain, and increased sociability. Five months later, she
continues to improve, regaining normal weight, 80% regression of her oral
tumor, and regaining use of hind legs and tail. Victor, a 10-year-old gelding,
with EPM was treated with conventional drug therapy for 5 weeks and yet
continued to deteriorate. At week 6, I started him on enhanced transfer
factors (6 caps/day). Within one week, he showed noticeable improvement,
and within 30 days, he was able to show. Since his full recovery 4 months
ago, Victor has continued to show at his original performance level.
Dr. Slagle says that he has used these products as stand-alone and in conjunction
with allopathic therapies in the following cases with excellent results:
CANCER: Canine lipomas, Canine/feline hepatic tumors, Equine squamous cell
carcinoma, Equine melanomas; Feline leukemia, oral tumors. VIRAL/BACTERIAL:
Upper and lower respiratory infections, Canine/feline dermatoses, Equine/bovine
scours, Equine septic arthritis, Feline abscesses. PARASITIC/FUNGAL/AUTOIMMUNE:
E.P.M., Feline and equine fungal dermatitis, and Feline autoimmune
gingivitis. more

My 11 year old dog, Shasta,
suffered a series of illnesses last year and a stroke this year. The stroke
left her paralyzed in the hind legs. I treated her with homeopathy
and herbal extracts and she recovered within a few hours. However, her
vitality was very low. I din't think she was going to make it through the
Spring. After a couple of weeks on the

appears to be back the way she was 2 years ago: frisky and playful. Some
veterinarians recommend the human formula, Transfer Factor Plus, instead
of the pet formula for their sick animals. I also give the human formula
to my dog because I believe that it is more potent that the pet formula.

Marine
Phytoplankton contains all the essential components of life. The percentage
of rejuvenating elements in plankton remarkably exceeds those present in
brewer's yeast and wheat germ. Plankton corrects the deficient or unbalanced
nutrition, common in the customs of our present-day civilization of consuming
incomplete foods, often with added chemical ingredients, which expose us
to physiological problems as various as they are numerous.

Fish
Oil: The Natural Anti-inflammatory
by Joseph Maroon, Ph.D.
Did you know that the root cause of serious chronic diseases such as
heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, cancer, arthritis, and asthma has been
identified as chronic inflammation? Although numerous studies have confirmed
these findings, few physcians are aware of or consider the fact that the
battle against inflammation is at the forefront of the fight for health
and well-being of the global population. Authors Joseph Maroon and Jeffrey
Bost have set out to reverse that trend with "Fish Oil: The Natural Anti-Inflammatory."
Ultra-Refined
Fish Oil
Pharmaceujtical companies
have spent billions of dollars in an attempt to understand the bio-chemistry
of inflammation. Unfortunately, pharmaceutical anit-inflammatories such
as Celebrex, Vioxx, and Bextra have been shown to greatly increase the
risk of heart attack, stroke, and uncontrollable gastric hemorrhage, with
potentially fatal consequences. Is there a safer alternative? Absolutiely!
The answer lies in the power of the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil,
undeniably the most under-recognized and also the most petent natural anti-inflammatory
available. With compelling arguments and the results of thousands of clinical
studies to support them. the uathors explain in plain and simple terms;
How the inflammation process works and how it can evolve into a chroninc
condition that is the cause of many diseases; How fatty acids work in the
body; Why supplementtion with omega-3 fatty acids can restore the body's
balance and mitigate the effects of inflmmatory factors; and why fish oil
is the best source of omega-3 fatty acids, and how to identify good-quality
fish oil supplements.

Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is also
a Heindl Scholar in Neuroscience as well as the team neurosurgeon to the
world-champion Pittsburgh Steelers. His publications numbr more than 250,
and he is a reviewer on five medical journals and an editorial board member
of "Neurological Research." Jeffrey Bost is a neurosurgical physician assistant
and clinical instructor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University
of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He has coauthored many presentations, articles,
and grants exploring the use of omega-3 fatty acids.

has done a great job compiling evidence supporting the use of fish oils.
SALT
IS VITAL FOR YOUR ANIMALS --- IF IT'S THE RIGHT KIND
The salt you buy at the store is only sodium chloride (refined common
table salt); all of the other beneficial elements have been removed.
"Herds of elephants risk injury and death in a perilous journey to hidden
salt caves where they supplement their sodium deficient diets." Cindy
Engel Ph.D. author of Wild
Health: How Animals Keep Themselves Well and What We Can Learn From Them
Our pets also suffer from sodium deficiency.
It seems that the medical and veterinary professions have been guilty
of "over kill" and have been gravely misinformed about "sodium". On December
2, 1983, an article appeared in the local newspaper entitled "Chloride
may play role in hypertension". Doctors Theodore W. Kurtz and Curtis Morris,
Jr., in a paper published in Science Magazine, concluded that table salt
(sodium chloride) is the cause of hypertension and high blood pressure.
Most of the warnings that dietary sodium is important in causing or worsening
hypertension are based mainly on studies in animals and humans where only
(sodium chloride) was used as the source of sodium. These researchers say
the findings indicate that salt (sodium chloride) and sodium cannot be
used interchangeably. Refined Sea Salt, this is where things go
wrong, at least in terms of your health.
Domesticated
animals need the right kind of salt. Farmers place salt-blocks on their
pasture so that their livestock and all other animals can lick the salt
to their heart's content. Major producing companies dry their salt in huge
kilns with temperatures reaching 1200 degrees F, changing he salt's chemical
structure, which in turn adversely affects the human body. Avoid the common
refined table salt.
An abundance of the ingredients in unrefined real salt are as synonymous
with life today as they were a billion years ago before single cells appeared
here. Lack of them is synonymous with birth defects, organ failure, decay,
diseases, premature aging and death at a young age. Long before the earth
knew pollutants of any kind, a huge, ancient sea covered what is now North
America. Pure, natural salt was the main ingredient of this sea, and over
millions of years, the water in the sea evaporated, leaving the salt in
undisturbed deposits.
Organic
Himalayan Crystal Salt, Solar Dried, 100% Natural, - fine or coarse.

The
best way to provide salt to your pets is to provide two separate
bowls. One with real-unrefined-unheated-natural-sea-salt and one without,
so that the animals can consume as much salt as they require. They will
drink from the bowl that contains salted water, however once they have
had enough salt, they will drink from the bowl that has plain water.
Dr. Jeffrey R. Cutler
- "An eight-year study of a New York City hypertensive
population stratified for sodium intake levels found those on low-salt
diets had more than four times as many heart attacks as those on normal-sodium
diets – the exact opposite of what the “salt hypothesis” would have predicted.
"Many people believe that salt is harmful to the human body. The truth
is we cannot live without salt (sodium chloride)"

SICK OF DRUGGING YOUR PET?
Dr Charles E Loops DVM - "After
10 years of traditional veterinary practice I became tired of having no
treatment for chronic disease, incurable conditions, and a plethora of
allergic maladies which seem to plague all veterinary practices. I was
frustrated with giving animals cortisone because
I had no other solutions, or using antibiotics
for infections which I knew were of viral origin. There is so much that
can be done for an animal, bird, or reptile that is ailing by utilizing
homeopathic medicine."

Michael Dym, VMD - "Over the past 40 years and 17 generations
of dogs and, cats we are seeing tremendous increases in chronic ill health
in our pets that was rare back in the early 1960's. Most of these illnesses
revolve around breakdown in our pets' immune systems, and include chronic
skin/ear allergies, digestive upset, thyroid/adrenal/pancreatic disorders,
seizures, gum/ teeth problems, degenerative arthritis, kidney/liver failure,
and cancer across all ages and breeds. We are also seeing a record number
of behavioral and emotional disorders including alarming and unexplained
fears/aggression., as well as difficulty focusing/training and paying attention.
The analogy of these compared with escalating immune/behavioral diseases
in children is quite disturbing. The two biggest factors in our pets' population
health decline over these generations has been the severe overuse
of multiple vaccines and nutrient poor and toxin
filled commercial pet foods. We have also failed to address the underlying
cause of disease by only sup pressing symptoms with antibiotics,
cortisone
and related drugs, so the disease progresses and goes deeper. Homeopathy
offers a viable alternative in truly curing pets and making their bodies
healthier."
Dr. Pat Bradley, DVM, Conway, USA - "The most common problems
I see that are directly related to vaccines
on a day to day basis are ear or skin
conditions, such as chronic discharges and
itching.
I also see behaviour problems such as fearfulness
or aggression. Often guardians will report
that these begin shortly after vaccination, and are exacerbated with every
vaccine. In a more general and frightening context, I see the overall health
and longevity of animals deteriorating. The bodies of most animals have
a tremendous capacity to detoxify poisons, but they do have a limit. I
think we often exceed that limit and over-whelm the body's immune system
function with toxins from vaccines, poor quality foods,
insecticides,
environmental toxins, etc. This is why we've seen such a dramatic increase
in allergies,
organ failures, and behaviour problems." (NOTE:
a growing number of holistic veterinarians use
Transfer Factor before and after vaccination to minimize the side effects
and help the animal recover)
Dr. Blanco, D.V.M - "You take healthy animals
and often very quickly after you vaccinate, you
can see simple things like itching of the
skin or
excessive
licking of the paws, sometimes even with no
eruptions. We see a lot of epilepsy,
often after a rabies vaccination. Or dogs or cats can become aggressive
for several days. Frequently, you'll see urinary
tract infections in cats, often within three months after their
[annual] vaccination. If you step back, open your mind and heart, you'll
start to see patterns of illness post-vaccination." more

Will Falconer, DVM - "Most of the chronic diseases we commonly
see in animals (and humans) have an immune basis, e.g. diabetes, allergies,
asthma, thyroid disease, inflammatory bowel diseases, repeated ear infections,
cancer, etc. While they can be cured through the careful use of homeopathy,
the road to cure can be a long one -- often years if the animal has had
years of disease. Transfer factors can significantly shorten the course,
by giving a much needed balancing effect to the immune system. If the immune
system is overactive as in allergies, ear infections, asthma, diabetes,
or hypothyroidism, Transfer Factor can balance this overactivity so the
system is not attacking its own organs, overreacting to things that shouldn’t
be perceived as a threat. If, conversely, the immune system is under-active
as in mange, parasites, viral infections, or cancer, Transfer
Factor Plus can clearly stimulate it to better meet the challenges
it needs to be alert to." Prevaccination
Protection Dr. Falconer D.V.M. explains how to protect your animal
from vaccines damage
Sam Jones, DVM - "Two cats, both about 8 years old, had severe
diabetes. It was impossible to get the insulin requirements adjusted. They
had lost weight to a point that they were skin and bones. Both cats had
no quality of life left. After one week of being on transfer
factors; we were able to get their insulin requirements adjusted. It
is now 6 months and they have regained their weight and have a great quality
of life and health."
Our
pets are prone to suffer from minerals and trace mineral deficiency. For
optimum health, I supplement my animal's diet (and my diet too) with the
following: fulvic minerals , marine
phytoplankton (consist of an immense arsenal and array of naturally
occuring powerful phytochemicals, biochemicals, supercharged antioxidants,
free-radical scavengers, super oxide dismutases, nutrients, enzymes, hormones,
amino acids, antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals), bee
pollen (rich in naturally occuring vitamins),
kelp
(marine plants),
the right kind of salt
(not
common table salt) and therapeutic clay (to
promote healing and to detoxify) and with omega 3
oils. Shasta does not drink
tap water. I give her only
energized,
alkaline microwater which is free from toxic chlorine and fluoride.

Just like humans, domesticated animals like dogs and cats are affected
by the health hazards of modern living. Pollution, poor nutrition, stress
and unhealthy lifestyles can lead to a variety of illnesses and conditions
that are very similar to those experienced by humans. These days, emotional
and psychological problems like depression, anxiety, ADHD and behavioral
problems are just as prevalent in pets as they are in their owners. Similarly,
physical ailments such as diabetes,
arthritis, chronic fatigue, digestive disorders, cystitis, kidney and liver
disease, skin disorders, obesity, thyroid dysfunction and other problems
are becoming more and more common in domesticated animals. Many, if not
most of these conditions can be prevented by helping your pets to live
a healthier lifestyle. For pets already suffering from existing conditions,
a combination of lifestyle changes and natural medicine can work wonders!

CHLORINATED
and FLUORIDATED WATER.... A BIG NO-NO !!! There
is a perception among many people that bottled water is somehow more healthy
or pure than water from their tap. This is simply an illusion of marketing.
A four-year study by the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), released
in 1999, found that one-fifth of the sampled bottled waters contained known
neurotoxins and carcinogens such as styrene, toluene and xylene. Another
NRDC study found that, out of 103 brands of bottled water, one-third contained
traces of arsenic and E. coli. This means that out of a sample of 1,000
bottles sold in the U.S., at least 300 would have some level of chemical
contamination. It is well known that the average city water today contains
over 500 chemicals that do not belong in it. Part of this is due to the
fact that most delivery systems in the U.S. include cement, asbestos pipes,
cast iron, PVC (porous to certain solvents, herbicides and pesticides)
and that lead, cadmium and other toxic metals leach out of valves and couplings
of pipes between a water treatment plant and a faucet in the home. Why
Purified and Distilled Bottled Water are Bad For You and Your Animals
Safe,
toxin-free, Ionized,
Energized, Drinking Water helps to naturally flush toxins and acidic
waste from the body and is a powerful antioxidant. Ionized Water makes
more oxygen available to our cells than distilled, reverse osmosis, filtered
only, bottled or tap water and is the best possible drinking water. "Disease
and early death is more likely to be seen with the long term drinking of
purified water. Avoid it except in special circumstances." Zoltan P.

MSM:
Organic Sulphur to alleviate pain in animals
Nature's Alternative to Rimadyl, Steroids and NSAID
- (learn about the terrible side effects of steroids
and Rimadyl)
Jean C. Hofve, DVM - "I have written several articles for the
internet newsletter Critterchat, one in particular on nutrition in which
I discuss MSM along with other supplements, with specific dosages.
I recently suggested MSM
and Glucosamine (1000 mg daily each) for a co-worker's labrador retriever,
who at only 4 years old was moving like an old lady. She's been on it maybe
5 or 6 weeks, and in the last couple of weeks we can already see a huge
difference--she's still a tad stiff when first getting up, but she's much
quicker about it, more willing to move around, and far more playful. We
all bring our dogs to work, so I see her every day, and even so it's been
quite apparent to me that she is greatly improved. (She's much faster coming
after my dog, of course he asks for it by stealing her tennis balls!) In
fact her owner says now he has to worry about her overdoing it, she has
so much energy and bounce. The combination of glucosamine sulfate and MSM
has just been terrific, they seem to complement and synergize with each
other."
Agility for dogs and
cats is a safe alternative to Rimadyl, steroids, or NSAID, with no side
effects.
Agility
with Glucosamine and MSM A holistic multi-action formula that
contains glucosamine, MSM, sea mussels, special herbs and fish oils, which
support the biochemical functions necessary for healthy bones and joints.
Agility is safer than steroids and NSAID’s because it is an all natural
supplement that delivers special nutrients and herbs to the joint, bones
sand surrounding tissue. Agility is a safe alternative with no side effects.
Steroids
and NSAID’s (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can have medical disadvantages
such as pancreatic disease, diabetes and liver disease to name a few.
MSM,
a natural form of organic sulphur found in all living organisms, is present
in body fluids and tissues. It is part of the amino acid chain. Without
the presence of the proper amount of MSM in the body, the amino acids will
continue to build the glands but fail to produce the correct enzymes, so
animals and people are then prone to unnecessary illnesses. MSM is an important
dietary supplement for people and animals.
Ronald M. Lawrence MD - "I've been practicing medicine
for 50 years, and in all those years I've never seen a substance like this"
Lawrence says in The Journal of Anti-Aging Medicine a peer-reviewed scientific
journal, published Lawrence's preliminary study results last July. Arthritic
cartilage has only one-third the level of sulfur concentration of normal
cartilage - perhaps that is why MSM has been so effective in treating arthritis.
But researchers don't know for sure if MSM is beneficial for arthritis
because of its sulfur content or because of its antiinflammatory and analgesic
properties. Unlike aspirin, which offers immediate pain relief "MSM takes
three to four weeks before you have noticable changes Lawrence says, "except
in rheumatioid patients - they have felt differences in just one day, and
certainly bythree or four days." According to Jacob, Lawrence and Zucker's
forthcoming book, MSM can be a natural remedy for: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid
arthritis, fibromyalgia, tendonitis and bursitis, muscular soreness and
athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, post - traumatic inflammation
and pain, heartburn and hyperacidity, headaches and back pain, allergies."
Stanley W. Jacob MD - "In a double-blind
study of MSMs impact ondegenerative arthritis, he found that patients who
ingested 2,250mg of MSM a day for six weeks felt an improvement in their
pain reduction by 82%, on average."
MSM detoxifies the body and increases blood circulation. It is also
a free radical scavenger, prevents overreaction to other medicines, controls
acidity, coats the intestinal tract so parasites lose the ability to hang
on, helps to utilize vitamins and minerals, thereby providing the means
to derive the maximum benefit from what we and our animals eat.
Read Ruby Ricciardi's testimonial how
she uses MSM successfully instead of toxic
Rimadyl when her dog had spleen surgery.
The
Miracle of MSM: The Natural Solution for Pain by Stanley W. Jacob MD,
Ronald M. Lawrence MD - MSM, or methylsulfonylmethane, is the first safe,
natural, side-effect-free remedy for many types of pain and inflammatory
conditions. In this authoritative look at MSM, Drs. Stanley Jacob and Ronald
Lawrence reveal how to tap into the benefits of this amazing "miracle"
compound.
MSM
(Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane) is a pure, organic, non-toxic, non-metallic
element that occurs widely in nature. MSM has been shown to be completely
non-toxic in study after study, even in high dosages. Storehouses of MSM,
in mammals, decreases with age, which may be caused by changing diet or
body metabolism. This should not be allowed to occur. Your body uses MSM
to continually create new healthy cells to replace old ones. If your body
is not receiving the proper nutrition including MSM, the body may produce
weak dysfunctional cells. Available

The Health Wonders of Bee Pollen
by Steve Schecter, N.D.
Bee pollen is often referred to as nature's most complete food. Human
consumption of bee pollen is praised in the Bible, other religious books,
and ancient Chinese and Egyptian texts. It has long been prescribed by
traditional health practitioners-including the fathers of Western medicine
Hippocrates, Pliny the Elder, and Pythagoras-for its healing properties.
Bee pollen rejuvenates your body, stimulates organs and glands, enhances
vitality, and brings about a longer life span. Bee pollen's ability to
consistently and noticeably increase energy levels makes it a favorite
substance among many world class athletes and those interested in sustaining
and enhancing quality performance. Animals benefit greatly from bee pollen
too!
