Treating
Canine Aggressive Behavior with Homeopathy
by Monica Clarke
After reading a posted message about an aggressive Cocker Spaniel on
www.petfinders.com, I adopted Rusty from Cocker Rescue in northern Washington
State in October 2004, sight unseen. He was close to being euthanized
after being in three different homes and displaying extreme aggressive
behavior, including several incidences of biting. He was abused as
a puppy until he was about one year old, when his person dropped him off
at an animal shelter. Cocker Rescue found a home for him, but
it didn’t last due to his aggression. They took him back and then
placed a plea for help at Petfinders after fostering him for four months.
He was a very difficult dog to live with. Constantly tense, growling,
showing his teeth, biting (he even sent me to the Emergency Room once),
and not at all engaged or interested in life around him. He seemed
to be caught in a solitary world of mistrust. Once when I accidentally
nudged him in the middle of the night, around 3a.m., he half awoke and
stalked me, crawling on his belly, eyes staring straight through me, emitting
a low growl, through the bedroom until I retreated to another room and
closed the door. He did not show aggressive tendencies, however,
to my 1 year old Samoyed, 15 year old cat, or 8 month old kitten; but he
also didn’t have any idea how to “play.”
I immediately took him to a canine behavioral therapist to learn how
to effectively train Rusty and build a trusting relationship. I have
had many dogs in my lifetime and trained them all, but I was amazed at
how much I learned. While our daily relaxation/training sessions
helped, he was still tense, would attack anyone coming through my door,
and was not the happy pup he should be at 1-1/2 years old. I found
myself dreading to enter my own home and was exhausted at having to be
constantly on guard. After the 3a.m. stalking incident, I decided it was
time for a homeopathic remedy.
Rusty was given a well selected homeopathic remedy on a Saturday afternoon
in late November 2004. The next morning he was less rigid in his
posture. He gradually improved over the next few months and at this
writing (April 2004), he’s a totally different dog. “Aggressive”
is a term I wouldn’t even use with him now. He acts his age, is happy,
has learned to play, doesn’t growl or bare his teeth, and can’t wait to
show visitors his toys.
I particularly enjoy treating aggressive dogs. Along with behavioral
therapy (for both human and dog), and homeopathy, there is hope for these
tormented animals and their concerned guardians.

Pooping all over the house
"We've had terrible problems with all our animals (three cats and a
dog) peeing and pooping where they aren't supposed to, on our hardwood
floors under the table, on chair legs, on beds and in closets, etc. I started
giving all four of them the AFA products, especially
supplementing with enzymes,
probiotics, Super Sprout & Algae and CoQ10, based on what I had
read and heard from our great holistic vets and on the chat list. It has
helped tremendously. I started all this AFTER we took them to the vet and
they couldn't find anything wrong with them, and couldn't even suggest
anything to try! According to the vet, our 10-year-old schnauzer, Walter,
was simply experiencing "doggy Alzheimer's" for instance, and had "forgotten"
that he was housebroken! The CoQ10 seems to have helped him the most, so
maybe he was right. Anyway, it's such a relief and so fantastic to have
something that works!." Sharon

The Dog Whisperer DVD: A Compassionate, Nonviolent Approach to
Dog Training by Paul Owens
From the Foreword by Dr. Michael W. Fox, Senior Scholar, Biothics, The
Humane Society of The United States, Washington, D.C.
The Dog Whisperer DVD will give you immediate results using positive,
non-force training methods. On this DVD This DVD features trainer Paul
Owens, who is often referred to as the original Dog Whisperer since his
book was first released in 1999. Paul uses only positive training methods,
showing you easy ways to teach your dog to cooperate, not submit, and to
look at you as his leader. Coupling scientifically-proven methods with
kindness and compassion, these state-of-the-art dog training methods once
and for all show how a dog can live without fear or aggression. Using Dog
Whisperer Paul Owens step-by-step methods, your dog will learn to listen
to you even when tempted by other dogs, children on skateboards, joggers
or the aroma of a juicy steak! On the Dog Whisperer DVD, you ll learn 3
simple steps to each of 8 different dog behaviors: sit, go to your spot,
down, find it, stay, leave it, come and heel. Step-by-step instruction
makes training easy for the whole family. Solve unwanted dog behaviors
such as jumping, stealing, pulling on the leash, barking, digging, and
chewing. Get reliable dog behavior without jerking, hitting, pinning, shocking,
or shaking. Learn clicker training for faster results. Learn how to quickly
wean your dog off food treats. Includes fun tricks and games to play with
your dog. Special segments give an amusing, yet instructional look at training
from the dog s point of view.
Clicker
Training
Clicker training is the use of clickers to make a noise that becomes
a Conditioned Reinforcer (CR) by pairing the click with a treat (or other
Reinforcer - something that the dog really likes). Then you use the click
to tell the dog that they are doing the right thing and follow the click
with a treat to keep the click reinforcing. By using a click to reinforce
the dog when it does a desired behavior, you can get the dog to do that
behavior more and more and better and better. When the dog is doing the
behavior well and often, you give the behavior a name by saying the cue
right before the dog is going to do the behavior any way. After 20 to 50
repetitions, the dog is conditioned to do the behavior when you give the
cue. This method of training relies primarily on positive reinforcement,
which makes it very fun for the dog and the owner. Getting

Obedience: Expert Advice for Easy Training and Care
"Brian Kilcommons shows very clearly how to train a dog to obey your
commands. Basics such as "come", "down", "sit", "leave it" and many other
commands are taught in a simple and easy to learn manner. Nothing confusing
about this video. This video is for the family dog, not for showing or
jumping. My wife and I highly recommend this video for basic behavioral
training."

Armchair Trainer Joan Lask, creator of The Armchair Trainer video,
has been training dogs professionally since 1970. She is the founder and
senior instructor of the prestigious Jo-Thor's Dog Obedience Academy and
Jo-thor's Dog Trainers' Accredited Vocational School in Atlanta, Georgia.
She has lectured on obedience and presented countless demonstrations of
her successful techniques. Joan has also trained dogs for movies, including
Fried GreenTomatoes, T.V. shows such as Savannah, commercials and circus
acts. Through training over 10,000 dogs, Joan has developed her own successful
method of dog education called The Armchair Trainer.
An amzon.com reviewer: "Good video! Saved me a lot of time and money
by showing me how to do everything myself. My Pomeranian, Lab, and Cockapoo
were following commands after just a few days! Also, some of the training
aids from the video are such a relief! My lab learned to ring the little
bells when he needs to go out, and with one squirt of the sour spray has
learned not to bark at strangers- I would recommend this video to anyone!
Terrific, fast and helpful!" Laura Macland from Roswell, GA USA

Training
That Works for Your Dog
A professional dog trainer based in New Hampshire, April Frost offers
some no-nonsense advice on training a dog in this instructional video.
The system Frost advocates proceeds in logical steps, with the dog being
given lessons in a specific order. Among the major commands covered are
sit, heel, come, down, and stay, and lessons on how to get a dog to behave
when guests come to the door.
"I've seen a bunch of tapes, and this is by far the best. April really
knows how to explain things from the dog's perspective, and that makes
the training much more than the usual 'do this, do that'. The other thing
I love is how the material is organized and indexed: you just do one thing
at a time, move on to the next lesson when you like. This is an absolute
winner!"

Twisted
Whiskers : Solving Your Cat's Behavior Problems by Pam Johnson-Bennett
amazon.com reviewers: "A holistic approach. She explains why
your cat may be doing an undesirable behavior, and what you can do to stop
it. She also explains how diet can affect your cat's behavior. Some of
the behavior problems addressed include: spraying in the house, defacating/urinating
outside the litterbox, displaced aggression, play-biting, etc."
"No matter how bad your cat is, the answer to your prayers is in
this book. I learned so much about why my cat was being aggressive. The
chapter on litter box problems was not only informative but fun to read.
My friends have been so impressed with how well behaved my cat acts now.
Every cat owner should have this book in their library."
The
Cat Who Cried for Help : Attitudes, Emotions, and the Psychology of Cats
by Nicholas Dodman
"...incrediably insightful and informative in an easy to read format.
It is apparant that he has an exceptional understanding of feline behaviour
and that he truly cares for the well being of cat and owner. His explaination
of prescriptions used in behavior modification gave me the confidence to
move forward this with method of treatment. When you have a problem with
a cat you love and when parting with that cat is
absolutely
not an option, Dr. Dodman comes in with welcome,
practical and sound advice. Anyone who loves cats will appreciate and benefit
by reading this book." an amazon.com reviewer
Your
Cat Crazy? : Solutions from the Casebook of a Cat Therapist by
John C. Wright
amazon.com reviewers: "This is the first book about pets that
I actually read from start to finish. It had a lot of great case studies,
which provided excellent examples of symptoms cats produce (urinating on
furniture, refusal to eat, etc.), and how to overcome this "crazy" behavior.
I recommend this book to anyone who has a cat(s) and wants to better understand
them. If you want suggestions for training your cat, this book is great!
Biggest lesson learned: Don't punish your cat; there are better, more effective
solutions to change your cat's behavior. "
"I've read a lot of books about cats and their unusual behavior.
This is the first book that truly clarified for me why cats do what they
do and why it makes sense to them. This book was like a lightbulb illuminating
overhead with the message "of course that's why she does that, why didn't
I see that before?"

Guide to Natural Remedies for Cats : Safe and Effective Alternative Treatments
and Healing Techniques from the Nations Top Holistic Veterinariansby
Martin Zucker
An introduction and a guide to the vast world of natural methods, treatments,
and foods that are now available for cats. Veterinarians from around the
country offer information and opinions to help you determine what's best
for your cat. In addition to showing you how to develop a healthy diet
for your pet, these doctors will tell you about alternative treatments
such as homeopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage, and herbal
medicine.
"Finding this book was a Godsend. After purchasing several other
"natural cat care" books, this book exceeded all expectations and made
the others a waste of money. This is the only book you'll ever need to
keep your cat healthy, or in my case...to save its life. After my cat was
diagnosed with a life-threatening disease called Fatty Liver Syndrome,
I followed the suggestions of several veterinarians in this book, as well
as utilizing "conventional" medicine with my local veterinarian and her
blood enzyme levels were normal after only 3 weeks! Normally, recovery
takes twice as long." amazon reviewer
Keep
Your Cat Healthy the Natural Way by
Pat Lazarus
"This is the only health and/or nutrition book I've read cover to
cover. The topics are fascinating, and the writing style engaging. Lazarus
provides general information about feline nutrition (or lack thereof) and
diet suggestions, as well as sections dedicated to a variety of feline
medical
problems and both their standard and holistic treatments. She cites numerous
holistic veterinarians, but this is not a tirade against conventional medicine.
It does offer hope through alternative solutions." an amazon reviewer

A growing number of veterinarians and animal nutritionists say that
many of our pets' disease and suffering can be prevented or cured with
nutrition. Holistic veterinarians teach that processed pet food (meaning
cooked
food) is the main cause of illness and premature death in the modern dog
and cat. For a return to health, pets require a diet which strengthens
the immune system and most closely resembles that which they would get
in the wild (meaning raw food). Grains are not part of the
natural diet of wild dogs and cats. Carnivores cannot maintain long term
production of the quantity of amylase enzyme necessary to properly digest
and utilize the carbohydrates.

Michael Dym, VMD - "Over the past 40 years and 17 generations
of dogs and, cats we are seeing tremendous increases in chronic ill health
in our pets that was rare back in the early 1960's. Most of these illnesses
revolve around breakdown in our pets' immune systems, and include chronic
skin/ear allergies, digestive upset, thyroid/adrenal/pancreatic disorders,
seizures, gum/ teeth problems, degenerative arthritis, kidney/liver failure,
and cancer across all ages and breeds. We are also seeing a record number
of behavioral and emotional disorders including alarming and unexplained
fears/aggression., as well as difficulty focusing/training and paying attention.
The analogy of these compared with escalating immune/behavioral diseases
in children is quite disturbing. The two biggest factors in our pets' population
health decline over these generations has been the severe overuse
of multiple vaccines and nutrient poor and toxin
filled commercial pet foods. We have also failed to address the underlying
cause of disease by only sup pressing symptoms with
antibiotics,
cortisone
and related drugs, so the disease progresses and goes deeper. Homeopathy
offers a viable alternative in truly curing pets and making their bodies
healthier."
VACCINATION: Dr Charles E Loops DVM says "Vaccinations represent a major
assault on the body's immune system." Routine vaccination is known to create
short term and long term multitude of symptoms." Read the comments
of veterinarians who believe vaccines are damaging our pets.
Homeopathy is renowned for its success to antidote or remove the toxic
effects of vaccines and to re-establish balance in the organism and restore
health. Certain homeopathic remedies taken before and after vaccination
can protect from vaccine damage. A professional homeopathic veterinarian
should be consulted for more information. You can learn more about homeopathy's
ability to reduce or repair damage caused by vaccines and alternative to
vaccines.
MEDICATION: Beware of drugs that your conventional veterinarian may
give your animal. They are often innefective and may have serious side
effects. Frustrated with the failures of conventional veterinary medicine,
Dr. Charles E Loops DVM says: "After 10 years of traditional veterinary
practice I became tired of having no treatment for chronic disease, incurable
conditions, and a plethora of allergic maladies which seem to plague all
veterinary practices. I was frustrated with giving animals cortisone because
I had no other solutions, or using antibiotics for infections which I knew
were of viral origin. There is so much that can be done for an animal,
bird, or reptile that is ailing by utilizing homeopathic medicine." Learn
about the danger of antibiotics for your
pets. You can also learn about using
HOMEOPATHY
as an effective and safe alternative to antibiotics and other drugs for
animals. (See info about chemo therapy further down.)

Optimum Animal Nutrition
Dr. Kollath, of the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, headed a study
done on animals. When young animals were fed cooked and processed
foods they initially appeared to be healthy. However, as the animals reached
adulthood, they began to age more quickly than normal and also developed
chronic degenerative disease symptoms. A control group of animals raised
on raw foods aged less quickly and were free of degenerative disease.
Most commercial pet food (kibbles and canned food for dogs or cats)
are some of the world's most synthetic edible products, containing virtually
no whole ingredients. In December 1995, the British Journal of Small Animal
Practice published a paper contending that processed pet food supresses
the immune system and leads to liver, kidney, heart and other diseases.
This research, initially conducted by Dr Tom Lonsdale, was researched further
by the Australian Veterinary Association and proven to be correct.
For a return to health, pets require a diet which strengthens the immune
system and most closely resembles that which they would get in the wild
(meaning RAW FOOD). Grains are NOT part of the natural diet
of wild dogs and cats. Carnivores cannot maintain long term production
of the quantity of amylase enzyme necessary to properly digest and utilize
the carbohydrates. Dr. William Pollak D.V.M, says that 74.7% of common
diseases in dogs and 63% of common diseases in cats can be eliminated without
medical intervention over a period of one year with proper diet modifications
and an understanding of the healing process as exhibited through healing
episodes. Approaching disease from the perspective of health is the most
powerful means of eliminating disease". According to holistic vets,
even the top quality kibble or canned pet foods with the very best nutrients
are still cooked, processed, denaturated, and dead food that have no health
or life enhancing nutritional qualities.
RAW BONES versus COOKED BONES: Holistic veterinarians say that raw bones
are NOT harmful to carnivores. Only cooked bones can splinter and can pose
a threat. Wild carnivores do not debone their kills. I have seen documentaries
of tiny white foxes catching doves and swallowing the birds whole with
feathers, claws, beak, and all. Their stomach juices are very acidic and
and loaded with natural enzymes that disolves and digests bone material.
Chewing on raw bones helps to strengthen the jaw bones, massage the gums
while stimulating the salivary and digestive glands, help reduce plaques
and calculus accumulation on the tooth surfaces, clean teeth and reduce
occurrence of gingivitis. Bones are a good source of calcium and other
important minerals.

offers a viable alternative in truly curing pets and making their bodies
healthier."
Dr. Pat Bradley, DVM, Conway, USA - "The most common problems
I see that are directly related to vaccines
on a day to day basis are ear or skin
conditions, such as chronic discharges and
itching.
I also see behaviour problems such as fearfulness
or aggression. Often guardians will report
that these begin shortly after vaccination, and are exacerbated with every
vaccine. In a more general and frightening context, I see the overall health
and longevity of animals deteriorating. The bodies of most animals have
a tremendous capacity to detoxify poisons, but they do have a limit. I
think we often exceed that limit and over-whelm the body's immune system
function with toxins from vaccines, poor quality foods,
insecticides,
environmental toxins, etc. This is why we've seen such a dramatic increase
in allergies,
organ failures, and behaviour problems." (NOTE:
a growing number of holistic veterinarians use
Transfer Factor before and after vaccination to minimize the side effects
and help the animal recover)
Dr. Blanco, D.V.M - "You take healthy animals
and often very quickly after you vaccinate, you
can see simple things like itching of the
skin or
excessive
licking of the paws, sometimes even with no
eruptions. We see a lot of epilepsy,
often after a rabies vaccination. Or dogs or cats can become aggressive
for several days. Frequently, you'll see urinary
tract infections in cats, often within three months after their
[annual] vaccination. If you step back, open your mind and heart, you'll
start to see patterns of illness post-vaccination." more

Will Falconer, DVM - "Most of the chronic diseases we commonly
see in animals (and humans) have an immune basis, e.g. diabetes, allergies,
asthma, thyroid disease, inflammatory bowel diseases, repeated ear infections,
cancer, etc. While they can be cured through the careful use of homeopathy,
the road to cure can be a long one -- often years if the animal has had
years of disease. Transfer factors can significantly shorten the course,
by giving a much needed balancing effect to the immune system. If the immune
system is overactive as in allergies, ear infections, asthma, diabetes,
or hypothyroidism, Transfer Factor can balance this overactivity so the
system is not attacking its own organs, overreacting to things that shouldn’t
be perceived as a threat. If, conversely, the immune system is under-active
as in mange, parasites, viral infections, or cancer, Transfer
Factor Plus can clearly stimulate it to better meet the challenges
it needs to be alert to." Prevaccination
Protection Dr. Falconer D.V.M. explains how to protect your animal
from vaccines damage
Sam Jones, DVM - "Two cats, both about 8 years old, had severe
diabetes. It was impossible to get the insulin requirements adjusted. They
had lost weight to a point that they were skin and bones. Both cats had
no quality of life left. The cats were given Transfer
Factor along with a healthy diet to help support their immune system.
A week later, we were able to get their insulin requirements adjusted.
It is now 6 months and they have regained their weight and have a great
quality of life and health."
Our
pets are prone to suffer from minerals and trace mineral deficiency. For
optimum health, I supplement my animal's diet (and my diet too) with the
following: fulvic minerals , marine
phytoplankton (consist of an immense arsenal and array of naturally
occuring powerful phytochemicals, biochemicals, supercharged antioxidants,
free-radical scavengers, super oxide dismutases, nutrients, enzymes, hormones,
amino acids, antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals), bee
pollen (rich in naturally occuring vitamins),
kelp
(marine plants),
the right kind of salt
(not
common table salt); magnesium
oil,(a miracle mineral in its healing effect on a wide range of diseases
as well as in its ability to rejuvenate the aging body). and therapeutic clay (to
promote healing and to detoxify) and with omega 3
oils. Shasta does not drink
tap water. I give her only
energized,
alkaline microwater which is free from toxic chlorine and fluoride.
I support my animals' immune system with Transfer Factor.
I never cook or warm up food in a microwave
oven. Please read about the Hidden Hazards of
Microwave Cooking. Shirley
Just like humans, domesticated animals like dogs and cats are affected
by the health hazards of modern living. Pollution, poor nutrition, stress
and unhealthy lifestyles can lead to a variety of illnesses and conditions
that are very similar to those experienced by humans. These days, emotional
and psychological problems like depression, anxiety, ADHD and behavioral
problems are just as prevalent in pets as they are in their owners. Similarly,
physical ailments such as diabetes,
arthritis, chronic fatigue, digestive disorders, cystitis, kidney and liver
disease, skin disorders, obesity, thyroid dysfunction and other problems
are becoming more and more common in domesticated animals. Many, if not
most of these conditions can be prevented by helping your pets to live
a healthier lifestyle. For pets already suffering from existing conditions,
a combination of lifestyle changes and natural medicine can work wonders!

CHLORINATED
and FLUORIDATED WATER.... A BIG NO-NO !!! There
is a perception among many people that bottled water is somehow more healthy
or pure than water from their tap. This is simply an illusion of marketing.
A four-year study by the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), released
in 1999, found that one-fifth of the sampled bottled waters contained known
neurotoxins and carcinogens such as styrene, toluene and xylene. Another
NRDC study found that, out of 103 brands of bottled water, one-third contained
traces of arsenic and E. coli. This means that out of a sample of 1,000
bottles sold in the U.S., at least 300 would have some level of chemical
contamination. It is well known that the average city water today contains
over 500 chemicals that do not belong in it. Part of this is due to the
fact that most delivery systems in the U.S. include cement, asbestos pipes,
cast iron, PVC (porous to certain solvents, herbicides and pesticides)
and that lead, cadmium and other toxic metals leach out of valves and couplings
of pipes between a water treatment plant and a faucet in the home. Why
Purified and Distilled Bottled Water are Bad For You and Your Animals
Safe,
toxin-free, Ionized,
Energized, Drinking Water helps to naturally flush toxins and acidic
waste from the body and is a powerful antioxidant. Ionized Water makes
more oxygen available to our cells than distilled, reverse osmosis, filtered
only, bottled or tap water and is the best possible drinking water. "Disease
and early death is more likely to be seen with the long term drinking of
purified water. Avoid it except in special circumstances." Zoltan P.

Routine
Animal Vaccination: Is it really safe and effective?
Most recently, an article appeared in the Journal of the American Veterinary
Medical Association entitled "Are We Vaccinating Too Much?"
Dr. Richard Pitcairn D.V.M. Ph.D:"In
this article we begin to address the subject of vaccinosis, the general
name for chronic dis-ease caused by vaccines. For some readers the very
idea that vaccines are anything but wonderful and life-saving may come
as a surprise, and it's not a very pleasant one. After all, the general
population pictures vaccines as one of modern medicine's best and brightest
moments, saving literally millions from the scourge of diseases like poliomyelitis
and smallpox. " Dr. Richard Pitcairn
D.V.M. Ph.D
Dr. McCluggage DVM,
- "...we must stop advocating yearly vaccines because of the harm we are
doing to the animals we vaccinate. He covered the homeopathic concept of
"vaccinosis". Vaccinosis is a disease entity that may be introduced through
vaccinating animals or people. Once vaccinosis develops, there is a disturbance
in the bodies vital forces that leads to symptoms of chronic disease that
can be very difficult (and often impossible) to cure. Dr. McCluggage also
stated that there are no good reasons to recommend annual vaccinations
for our companion animals. " Dr. McCluggage

Donna Starita Mehan DVM:"Routine"
vaccination has adverse side-effects, either short or long term. With vaccines
that are repeated year after year, the frequency and severity of these
side-effects in our pets has increased dramatically. Most of the problems
involve the immune system. After all, the immune system is what vaccines
are designed to stimulate. But they do so in a very unnatural way that
can overwhelm and confuse the immune system and can result in increased
susceptibility to acute infections (such as ear infections in dogs, bladder
infections in cats), chronic tapeworm problems, or in more degenerative
cases, cancer." Donna Starita Mehan

Correctly
prescribed homeopathic remedies can often undue the damage caused by vaccines.
Homeopathy
is
noted for its success to antidote or remove the toxic effects of vaccines
and to re-establish balance in the organism and restore health. Certain
homeopathic remedies taken after vaccination can minimize
vaccine damage. A professional homeopathic vet should
be consulted for more information.

What
Every Parent Should Know BEFORE Their Childen Are Vaccinated! Why
are a growing number of parents and health care professionals around the
world questioning vaccination? The controversy stems from the thousands
of deaths and permanent disabilities attributed to vaccination annually,
as well as the many published medical studies, government statistics, congressional
testimonies, and other credible sources that directly contradict commonly
held assumptions about vaccine safety and effectiveness.

"Bart Classen, a Maryland physician,
published data showing that diabetes rates rose significantly in New Zealand
following a massive hepatitis B vaccine campaign in young children, and
that diabetes rates also went up sharply in Finland after three new childhood
vaccines were introduced." Nicholas Regush ABCNEWS.com
In
fall 1997, two influential professional magazines featured articles asking
the question: Has the decrease of infectious diseases in childhood through
the mass use of vaccines been replaced with an increase in chronic diseases
such as diabetes and asthma? The Economist, a prestigious international
magazine read by world leaders in government, business and public policy,
and Science News, a magazine read by both health care professionals and
the general public, explored the reported links between vaccines and chronic
diseases in their November 22, 1997 issues. Learn
