The World
Health Organization (WHO) estimates that there are 18 million people
with Alzheimer's. Over 4 1/2 million Americans have the disease. We account
for 25% of all Alzheimer's cases, even though we represent only 4.6% of
the world's population. Europe is experiencing half our rate of disease.
For Americans over 85 years of age, 50% are thought to have Alzheimer’s.
As the 20th century comes to a close, we are witnessing a staggering increase
in dementing illnesses. By the year 2030, it has been estimated that this
number will approach 9 million. It affects over half a million people in
the UK alone. It is characterised by progressive mental decline and begins
with periods of memory loss, confusion, and personality changes before
proceeding to full-blown dementia with complete loss of most cognitive
abilities and even physical abilities.
Pick's Disease is a progressively degenerative
neurological disease similar to Alzheimer's Disease. Pick's Disease affects
the frontal and temporal lobes first, with earliest symptoms showing up
as changes in personality and a decline in function at home as well as
work. Pick's Disease is frequently first diagnosed as stress or depression
and then as Alzheimer's disease. The treatment of Pick's disease is the
same as for various stages of other dementias such as Alzheimer's. This

In our magic-bullet society where physicians and patients alike are
programmed to turn to the pharmaceutical industry to cure our ills, it
appears that we have come up empty-handed when confronted by alzheimer's
and dementia. In the June 1999 issue of Archives of Neurology, the lack
of usefulness of any of these drugs was eloquently described in a guest
Editorial by Dr. William Pryse-Phillips.
Epidemiologic studies have shown that Alzheimer's patients have a higher
level of aluminum in their brain than do healthy people.
Particularly high levels have been found in the beta-amyloid deposits which
are so characteristic of the disease. Aluminum is known to be highly toxic
to brain neurons and recent research has shown that it can cause amyloid
fibrils to aggregate into structures resembling neurofibrillary tangles.
Canadian studies have found a direct correlation between the aluminum content
of drinking water and the incidence of Alzheimer's disease. Although some
medical doctors still question the aluminum link there seems to be growing
consensus that aluminum is somehow involved, if not in the initiation of
the disease, then at least in accelerating its progression.
The level of mercury in the brain of Alzheimer's
disease patients is significantly elevated and it is now accepted that
chronic low level mercury poisoning may be a significant factor in the
development of Alzheimer's disease. The level of mercury in the brain has
been found to be proportional to the number of amalgam fillings in the
teeth
Exposure to high levels of electromagnetic radiation
has been linked to the development of Alzheimer's disease as have severe
head injuries and a family history of Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's
disease.
Vitamin deficiencies have been implicated in the
development of Alzheimer's disease. A vitamin B-12 deficiency
is particularly serious as it can mimic the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease
and may even progress to Alzheimer's disease itself. One recent study found
that 40% of elderly Americans suffers from a vitamin B-12 deficiency. People
who have had surgery for stomach ulcers are particularly prone to a vitamin
B-12 deficiency. Lack of vitamins A, E, and beta-carotene has also been
linked to the development of Alzheimer's disease. British researchers found
that Alzheimer's disease patients admitted to a London hospital had only
half the vitamin E level in their blood as did healthy, matched controls.
The patients' beta-carotene levels were four times lower than that of the
controls.
The Alzheimer's Association has developed a list of ten warning signs
of Alzheimer's disease:
* Memory loss that affects job skills.
* Difficulty in performing familiar tasks.
* Problems with language.
* Confusion about time and place.
* Poor or diminished judgment.
* Problems with abstract thinking.
* Misplacing of things.
* Changes in mood or behavior.
* Changes in personality.
* Loss of initiative.

Drugs may do more damage than the disease - Alzheimer's patients
can quickly lose their verbal skills – but researchers fear it may have
more to do with the anti-psychotic drugs they’re routinely given than the
disease itself. The drugs may make the condition worse, researchers have
discovered, and they don't seem to offer any long-term benefits. Around
60 per cent of Alzheimer’s patients are put on an anti-psychotic, even
in the early stages of the disease, in order to control behaviour such
as aggression. This effect has earned the drugs the epithet of “the chemical
cosh”. The drugs can cause a serious deterioration within six months, and
new research is exploring the suspicion that the drugs are also increasing
the death rate among Alzheimer’s sufferers. Researchers from King’s College
London and the Universities of Oxford and Newcastle made the discovery
when they observed the progress of 165 Alzheimer’s patients in care homes.
The anti-psychotics reviewed by the research study were thioridazine (Melleril),
chlorpromazine (Largactil), haloperidol (Serenace), trifluoperazine (Stelazine)

Eating
soy linked to memory loss Frequently consuming foods containing
soy may contribute to memory loss, British experts say. Experts at England's
Loughborough and Oxford Universities researched the impact of soy consumption
in 719 senior citizens on the Indonesian island of Java, the Daily Mail
reported Saturday. Researchers determined people who ate soy at least twice
a day had 20 percent less memory function that those who ate it significantly
less. "Soy consumption is on the increase in the West and is often promoted
as a 'superfood.' Soy products are rich in micronutrients called phytoestrogens,
but it is not entirely clear what their effect on the aging brain is,"
said Professor Eef Hogervorst of Loughborough University. Hogervorst said
vegetarians and elderly women seemed to be highly susceptible to potential

Ginkgo biloba, an

Brain health dramatically improved by intake of omega-3
fatty acids and fish oils
Among various organs, in the brain, the fatty acids most extensively
studied are omega-3 fatty acids. Alpha-linolenic acid (18:3omega3) deficiency
alters the structure and function of membranes and induces minor cerebral
dysfunctions, as demonstrated in animal models and subsequently in human
infants. Even though the brain is materially an organ like any other, that
is to say elaborated from substances present in the diet (sometimes exclusively),
for long it was not accepted that food can have an influence on brain structure,
and thus on its function.
Lipids,
and especially omega-3 fatty acids, provided the first coherent experimental
demonstration of the effect of diet (nutrients) on the structure and function
of the brain. In fact the brain, after adipose tissue, is the organ richest
in lipids, whose only role is to participate in membrane structure. First
it was shown that the differentiation and functioning of cultured brain
cells requires not only alpha-linolenic acid (the major component of the
omega-3, omega3 family), but also the very long omega-3 and omega-6 carbon
chains (1). It was then demonstrated that alpha-linolenic acid deficiency
alters the course of brain development, perturbs the composition and physicochemical
properties of brain cell membranes, neurones, oligodendrocytes, and astrocytes
(2).This leads to physicochemical modifications, induces biochemical and
physiological perturbations, and results in neurosensory and behavioural
upset (3).
Consequently, the nature of polyunsaturated fatty acids (in particular
omega-3) present in formula milks for infants (premature and term) conditions
the visual and cerebral abilities, including intellectual. Moreover, dietary
omega-3 fatty acids are certainly involved in the prevention of some aspects
of cardiovascular disease (including at the level of cerebral vascularization),
and in some neuropsychiatric disorders, particularly depression, as well
as in dementia, notably Alzheimer's
disease. Recent results have shown that dietary alpha-linolenic acid deficiency
induces more marked abnormalities in certain cerebral structures than in
others, as the frontal cortex and pituitary gland are more severely affected.
These selective lesions are accompanied by behavioural disorders more particularly
affecting certain tests (habituation, adaptation to new situations). Biochemical
and behavioural abnormalities are partially reversed by a dietary phospholipid
supplement, especially omega-3-rich egg yolk extracts or pig brain. A dose-effect
study showed that animal phospholipids are more effective than plant phospholipids
to reverse the consequences of alpha-linolenic acid deficiency, partly
because they provide very long preformed chains.

A study conducted by Uppsala University in Sweden looked at the effect
of Omega 3 fatty acids on patients who already had Alzheimer's disease.
Researchers gave 89 patients the Omega 3 fatty acids Docosahexaenoic acid
(DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) for a period of 6 months and another
85 were given a placebo in the form of corn oil. After the initial 6-month
period, the placebo group also switched to Omega 3 for a further 6 months.
Although there was no real differences noted between the two groups in
general, there was an interesting result where 32 patients who had milder
mental impairment showed less of a decline whilst taking Omega 3. more

"My husband has Alzheimers in addition

This is a follow up for those who have asked how my Mother who has

Ruth was a woman in her early 70’s who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s
Stage 3. She had moderate level of memory loss and confusion. She talked

Of people doing things that emotionally made her feel very bad. Of feeling
alone and sorry for herself. Of all the love she felt but couldn’t always

Based upon this and many other symptoms we gave him a dose of Natrum
Sulphuricum (note this was the right remedy for her but the possibility
of it being the right remedy for another person with Alzheimer’s is very
low). By one month she was much happier. Her memory was much better for
both the past and the present. She was much less tired. She said that she
felt better than she had in years. She no longer felt so dragged down by
the past.
Over the next 10 years there was a very slow gradual decline into dementia
but much slower than average for Alzheimer’s patients. Whenever she didn’t
feel as good she took a dose of her remedy which lifted her up for weeks.
Despite the decline she was happier than she had ever been in her life.
The remedy helped her memory, health and happiness tremendously and slowed
but did not stop the development of the disease.
In this example you see the difference between homeopathy and other

Presently there is a common belief that there is no cure or even amelioration
for the degenerative process called Alzheimer's Disease. Having personally
experienced and witnessed in my patients the brain function enhancing qualities
of a blue-green algae named aphanizomenon flos-aqua, I was interested when
I read some reports of its effects on Alzheimers Disease. This algae is
particularly high in active neurotransmitters and appeared to have positive
therapeutic results in people whose general mental functioning seemed sluggish.
For my experiment I chose two individuals who had well documented Alzheimer's
Disease. They had obvious deficient mental functioning. Each month, besides
my notes, the mate of each of the patients was asked to fill out a questionnaire
covering thought process, memory function, ability to focus, judgment,
perception, emotions, ability to care for oneself, and sleep function.
Each section had several categories to be evaluated from 1 to 10 for a
total of 28 questions. Each case has been followed for 12 months.
The first case is a 66-year-old women with a seven-year history of Alzheimer's;
the last five of which were thoroughly diagnosed in 1978 and followed at
Stanford Medical Center. She had also been through oral choline and I.V.
chelation therapy without any effect on her deteriorating state.
On initial exam she revealed a significant aphasia. She seemed unable
to express her thoughts in words; her long and short tern memory was significantly
degenerated; she had great difficulty focusing on the present situation.
In essence she seemed absent. She also had a severe Parkinson-like tremor,
had much difficulty in walking a straight line and tilted to the right.
According to the report from her husband, she was completely unable
to take care of herself or even dress herself. The husband seemed hopefully
pessimistic. After one month of taking the blue green algae some decrease
in the aphasia was clearly discernible. A glimmer of awareness seemed to
have returned to her eyes. Some of the hand tremors had also decreased.
She was also able to put on an apron and tie it - something she had not
done for months. She also seemed to be able to express her feelings more.
By two months, her communication improved and she was able to watch TV
and understand what was happening.
By six months, her husband and I both agreed on our subjective experience
that her spirit, humor, and sense of awareness had significantly improved.
She was now able to work intellectually with the environment. Her short
term memory had improved. The aphasia had significantly improved over the
past six months, but had seemed to level off in the last month. Her attention
span had improved to the point that she could sit for several hours listening
to music. Her judgment, reasoning ability, and clarity of thinking had
significantly improved. There was no change in her long term memory. On
the physical level, she had moved from not being able to dress herself
to being able to put her clothes on, although sometimes backwards. She
was able to walk a straight line and stand almost straight.
At 12 months, some slight improvement in these areas was noted. Her
course at this point, after relatively rapid improvement in six months,
seems to be a very gradual improving situation. The second case involved
a 64-year-old lawyer from the Midwest who was diagnosed as having Alzheimer's
in 1982 after a series of neurological and psychological tests. Before
he had come for diagnosis his intellectual functioning and memory had significantly
decreased. He could no longer perform his work, or remember what transpired
beyond 15 minutes, and his IQ was measured at 92, significantly below that
of the average lawyer. He was put on the same protocol of the blue-green
algae as the first case. After one month his wife noted a cessation of
the degenerative process. After 12 month, she has noted no further obvious
degeneration, yet no significant return of lost function. The wife of the
patient is quite pleased with the results and feels the basis of a solid
husband-wife relationship has been preserved.

significant return of function and the other showing cessation of progressive

water. This is less than half of the amount of fluoride which is added
in fluoridation schemes.
Finally, the National Toxicology Program was asked to commission studies
to determine the extent of neurotoxic damage from aluminum in drinking
water, particularly stressing the fluoride interaction." Last October,
a Report by the National Institutes of Environmental Heath Sciences (NIEHS)
acknowledged that fluoride has been observed to have synergistic effects
on the toxicity of aluminum "I was particularly pleased when the US Environmental
Protection Agency report by Urbansky and Schock on the toxicity of lead
and fluoride in drinking water confirmed that fluoride complexes with other
substances in the water.
They also acknowledged that most drinking water contains a substantial
amount of fluoro-aluminium complexes. This should be a warning to dentists
who hold with the simplistic notion that fluoride only affects teeth and
is perfectly safe in drinking water." According to the NIEHS Report, most
water treatment processes result in increased levels of aluminum in the
finished drinking water. It stated that fluoridation will result in aluminum
fluoride complexes which will enhance neurotoxicity, or that fluoride itself
will enhance uptake and synergise the toxicity of the aluminum
Other studies have shown that in the presence of fluoride, aluminum
leaches out of cookware. Boiling fluoridated tap water in an aluminum pan
leached almost 200 parts per million (ppm) of aluminum into the water in
10 minutes. Leaching of up to 600 PPM occurred with prolonged boiling.
Different releases of aluminum depend upon the composition of the pan and
the type of food being cooked. Using non-fluoridated water showed almost
no leaching from aluminum pans. Glasser is frustrated that the Report recommended
further studies. "There are more than 40,000 studies on fluoride in the
scientific literature. How many more do they need? The recent York review
examined less than 300 - and they never bothered to review the Binghamton
University studies.
The incidence of Alzheimer's Disease and Alzheimer's-like dementia is
hitting people at much younger ages. The average age used to be 65 - now,
it affects people in their forties in ever-increasing numbers. With these
revelations, health authorities have a moral obligation to employ the precautionary
principle and cease the practice of artificial fluoridation forthwith.
In the meantime, six million people in England and about 160 million in
the United States drink artificially fluoridated water. "

A study showing a possible link between mercury exposure and
some forms of non familial or sporadic Alzheimer's

group of Swiss researchers and published in the Journal of Neurochemistry,

The transport of vitamin B12 to the brain can be disturbed or interrupted
by heavy metals such as inorganic mercury, which affects the blood-brain
barrier by causing leakage and hampering the active transport of nutrients.
Exposure to laughing gas (N2O), commonly given to women in labour, causes
similar B12 deficiencies in the brain of the infant, and sometimes in mothers

Certain aluminum compounds have been found to be an important component
of the neurological damage characteristics of Alzheimer's Disease (AD).
Much research over the last decade has focused on the role of aluminum
in the development of this disease.
Over the last few years, there has been concern about the exposures
resulting from leaching of aluminum from cookware and beverage cans. Some
common food additives contain aluminum. Due to certain additives, processed
cheese and cornbread are two major contributors to high aluminum exposures
in the American diet. With regard to pharmaceuticals, some common over-the-counter
medications such as antacids and buffered aspirin contain aluminum to increase
the daily intake significantly. more
In 1998 Julie Varner and two colleagues published research on the effects
of aluminum-fluoride and sodium-fluoride on the nervous system of rats.
They concluded, "Chronic administration of aluminum-fluoride and sodium-fluoride
in the drinking water of rats resulted in distinct morphological alterations
of the brain, including the effects on neurons and cerebrovasculature."
In layman's terms, it looked like fluoride and aluminum could cause Alzheimer's.
That was not a definitive study, but they may have been onto something.
Aluminum is in our drinking water, foods, and many consumer products. Adding

It has been suggested that exposure to weak electromagnetic fields (EMFs)
can disturb the production of the hormone melatonin by the pineal gland
in the brain, eventually leading to an increase in the risk of breast cancer
and degenerative diseases such as coronary artery disease, Parkinson's
and Alzheimer's. Likewise, epidemiological
and laboratory reports suggest that children exposed to EMFs from power
lines are at greater risk of developing leukaemia, and that adults exposed
to EMFs at work run a higher risk of leukaemia and brain cancer (Edwards,
1995a). There are more recent concerns that cellphone users are more likely
to suffer from brain tumours (Day & Kleiner, 1999). Nevertheless, such
reports lack adequate foundation and have yet to be confirmed.
In 1995, attention was drawn to the possible link between electromagnetic
radiation and Alzheimer's disease following
a landmark publication in the American Journal of Epidemiology by researchers
at the University of Southern California School
of Medicine. Subsequently, these researchers confirmed a direct relationship
between occupations exposing individuals to higher levels of electromagnetic
radiation and the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Their report,
published in the December 1996 issue of Neurology, revealed a substantial
increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease in individuals whose occupations
exposed them to higher than average levels of electromagnetic radiation.
The occupations determined to be "high risk" with respect to exposure included
electrician, machinist, machine operator, seamstress, sewing factory worker,
sheet metal worker, typist, keypunch operator, welder, machine shop worker,
and several others. The risk of developing Alzheimer's disease in these
individuals was c alculated to be as much as four times higher than the
general population. Subjects evaluated were at least 65 years of age. at
the time of their first examination and their recorded occupations reflected
what they had been doing up to 40 years prior to their evaluation and diagnosis
of Alzheimer's disease. more

puberty in children have been fed soy formula. (early maturation, such
as breast development and menstruation as early as 6 years of age). Scientists
have known for years that the isoflavones in soy products can depress thyroid
function and cause goiters in otherwise healthy children and adults. A
combined research team of Cornell University Medical College and Long Island
Community Hospital medical experts have found that children who develop
Type1 diabetes are twice as likely to have been fed soy formulas as those
fed all other foods This confirms concerns based on animal studies
raised in the 1980's and 1990s by Health Canada researcher Dr Fraser Scott
and led to the American Academy of Pediatrics issuing their warning to
pediatricians against any use of soy based formulas.
Brain.com reports an ongoing study involving 3,734 elderly Japanese-American
men. That research has found that the men who ate the most tofu during
mid-life had up to 2.4 times the risk of later developing Alzheimer's
disease. Lead researcher Dr. Lon R. White said that men who ate
tofu at least twice weekly showed brain aging about five years faster than
those who seldom ate tofu. Soy has also been implicated in interference
with the absorption of zinc, calcium, protein enzymes and amino acids.

While an experimental vaccine for Alzheimer’s disease may work, it was
found to cause life-threatening side effects in some cases. It is thought
that the vaccine works by causing the body’s immune system to fight against
abnormalities in the brain known as plaques. These plaques are thought
to cause some of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease including forgetfulness
and confusion. However, the vaccine may cause an immune overreaction causing
severe brain swelling. Some six percent of participants in a trial of the
vaccine suffered from severe brain swelling, leading the vaccine manufacturer,
Elan, to call off the trial. Researchers examined the brain of a woman
who had taken the vaccine and died after a fall in order to investigate
the side effect. They found fewer plaques in the woman’s brain than in
Alzheimer's patients who did not receive the vaccine.
However, researchers also found immune-system cells known as T cells
in the woman’s brain. T cells are not normally in the brains of patients
with Alzheimer’s, so the cells’ presence suggests an overreaction of the
immune system that may have harmed normal brain tissue and caused inflammation,
according to researchers. An Elan researcher leading the company’s effort
to develop an Alzheimer’s vaccine said that, despite setbacks, the company
hopes to begin trials of an altered version of the vaccine later this year,
and pointed out that the vaccine may have actually removed plaque from
the brain. However, other experts say that some patients with Alzheimer’s
have very few plaques, so it can’t be concluded that the lower level of
plaque was due to the vaccine. Moreover, it has not been proven that reducing
Alzheimer’s-related plaque improves symptoms in patients with Alzheimer’s
disease.
