"Our society has been conditioned with quick-fix and band-aid
medicine. We know from experience that this often times only gives temporary
relief and in fact can generate a rebound effect of symptoms or undesirable
side-effects. Complimentary medicine, in particular Homeopathy and Herbs,
can play a very large part in the successful rearing of our animals. Homeopathy
and Herbs are essentially, natural healing processes, providing remedies
to assist the patient to regain health by stimulating the body's natural
forces of recovery. They concentrate on treating the patient, rather than
the disease." Marina Zacharias HEALTHY
BREEDING WITH HERBS AND HOMEOPATHY
Homeopathy in a nutshell "Homeopathy
is a complete system of healing, discovered 200 years ago by a German physician,
Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. It has its own method of diagnosing and its own special
remedies. The remedies are all natural, rarely have side-effects and are
not addictive. They are safe for adults, the elderly as well as for infants,
children and animals. Even pregnant women can take the remedies safely.
Homeopathic remedies are very effective in acute and chronic diseases.
In the U.S., homeopathy is a legally recognized method of healing. Homeopathic
remedies use minute amounts of substances to act as a trigger to the body
and stimulate its natural immune system. We are attempting to make your
pet as healthy as he or
she
can be and gradually build up their body to the best that it can be.

Dr Charles E Loops DVM - "After 10 years of traditional veterinary
practice I became tired of having no treatment for chronic disease, incurable
conditions, and a plethora of allergic maladies which seem to plague all
veterinary practices. I was frustrated with giving animals cortisone (danger
of steroids) because I had no other solutions, or using antibiotics
(danger of antibiotics) for infections which
I knew were of viral origin. At this time I had some chronic health problems,
which had been unresolvable allopathically, but they responded to treatment
by homeopathy. It took some time but it worked.!"
Homeopathic
Care for Cats and Dogs: Small Doses for Small Animals
Dr. Hamilton begins by explaining how as a veterinarian, he grew he
grew increasingly frustrated with the limitations `modern' veterinary care;
of how he was often only able to provide temporary relief, with ailments
returning time and time again. He tells of his exploration into alternative
veterinary medicine and how by the mid/late 90's, he had become convinced
of the benefits of natural/homeopathic sustenance, prevention & treatment.
The book is essentially divided into 2 sections:
a) The 1st Section contains a reasonably detailed summary of the history
of homeopathic care & sustenance, its nature, philosophy and development.
Dr. Hamilton carefully explains the theories and principles behind homeopathic
care, of how it deals with the entire being (pet or human), seeking always
to identify and treat root causes of ailments and diseases. He expresses
his concerned that 'modern' medicine is too often symptom oriented, and
drugs are prescribed to suppress symptoms without curing the ailment itself.
With symptom suppressing medication, relief is temporary and over time,
ailments often reappear in even more virulent forms.
Dr. Hamilton cautions the reader of common pitfalls faced by beginners
and emphasises that proper homeopathic care requires much careful &
systematic observation.
He tells how homeopathic care is deeply rooted in human civilisation
and quickly dispels any notion that homeopathic remedies are 'quack' remedies
based on old wives' tales.
(b) The 2nd Section consists of a series of chapters which carefully
details common disorders and diseases afflicting our dogs and pets. From
skin disorders to bloat, from cuts & scratches to death-causing diseases
(and practically everything else in between). The author explores causes
and effects, and suggests homeopathic preventive care and remedies. Potencies
& dosages of homeopathic medicines are explained.
The chapter on vaccination is particularly interesting. This issue is
dealt with in some detail and Dr. Hamilton is openly critical of the current
vaccination practice.
My
Labrador/Retriever introduced me to Homeopathy
by David Dore, a Fellow
of The British Institute of Homeopathy and a registered Homeopath with
the Homeopathic Medical Association in the UK.
At
the age of six Ralph was in pain from arthritis and spondylitis and his
vet suggested homeopathic treatment for him. Our other options were steroids
or, if he was in too much pain, to have him put to sleep.I've always believed
having a dog as part of the family holds similar responsibilities as having
a disabled child, "one needs to be aware of their needs to lead a fulfilling
life".
As Ralph was unable to even walk a few yards without screaming in pain,
which meant he could no longer enjoy the beautiful park we live next to
in London and he had grown to know since he was fourteen weeks old we decided
to go ahead with homeopathic treatment for him.Within six months Ralph
was walking around his familiar routes in the park and under a year of
having treatment was running around again without any pain.
It
was after a year of homeopathic treatment for Ralph that a psychiatrist
I know stopped me in the park and told me that he was aware that Ralph
was being treated homeopathically. He was amazed at the improvement in
Ralph's condition, which had prompted him to question the efficacy of homeopathy.
At a later encounter he told me that Ralph had completely changed his views
on homeopathy and really considered homeopathic treatment as an effective
health care system. I have since learnt that the same psychiatrist refers
his patients to a homeopath before considering conventional psychiatric
treatment.
I am telling this story about Ralph as he was a unique Labrador/Retriever
and had many friends who loved him, from children to adults. Often when
walking with Ralph in London people would cross over the street just to
touch him, even children who apparently were afraid of dogs. Yes Ralph
was very special. Even the Princess Royal HRH Princess Anne, requested
that Ralph was to be around when she made her first visit to our premises
as she had heard so much about him.
It is through Ralph I became interested in homeopathy as a medical system
that works for acute and chronic illnesses and began my training as a homeopathic
practitioner

Homeopathic
perspective on chronic vaccine disease (vaccinosis)
Dr. Richard H. Pitcairn, D.V.M., Ph.D
My understanding of the importance of vaccination in animal diseases
gradually developed over several years. I began homeopathic practice without
considering vaccination as a factor of special importance. So, what I did
was to consider the totality of symptoms in the case and choose the remedy
which seemed to be the similimum based on that picture. This is classical
homeopathic procedure and, ordinarily, one which would be effective. However,
there were a significant number of cases that would not react curatively.
Though there was improvement in some respects, nonetheless, a cure was
not forthcoming. Eventually, through following the case over a period of
time, the image of the remedy Thuya would emerge — which when administered
would resolve the case which had been so difficult.
What, then, is the significance of Thuya as a remedy? Thuya is the most
important remedy to be used for that state induced by vaccination. Other
remedies noted to have this correspondence are Sulphur, Mezereum, Malandrinum,
Sarsaparilla, Carcinosin, and Silicea among others. Malandrinum and Carcinosin
are interesting remedies because both are nosodes — the former from horses
with “grease heel” and the latter from a cancerous discharge from a human
being. Thuya, Mezereum, and Sarsaparilla are vegetable remedies — Thuya
from the Arbor vitae tree, Mezereum is known as Spurge olive, and Sarsaparilla
an herbal medicine. Sulphur, the element and Silicea, which is silicon
dioxide or quartz are mineral remedies. Thus we have representations from
all the major remedy classes.
It gradually dawned on me that the underlying problem in some of my
difficult cases was a state of illness that had been induced by vaccination.
So, rather than simply use a totality of symptoms to choose my prescription,
I found it more effective to emphasize the rubric “Vaccination, effects
of” almost to the exclusion of other remedies. In this way, I was able
to make progress in some very frustrating clinical situations. Let me give
you a few recent cases that demonstrate the usefulness of Thuya. learn

Homeopathy
and Wildlife Trauma
Wild
animals are commonly admitted for rehabilitation with health problems.
Many of these conditions are a result of an injury, such as a fall, blow,
or puncture. The animal may arrive in shock, dehydrated, emaciated,
in respiratory distress, or having seizures. Wildlife rehabilitators provide
quiet, heat, fluids and basic first aid - as well as effective rehabilitation
care, such as appropriate diets and facilities. They work closely with
veterinarians to ensure the animal gets the appropriate veterinary care.
Like many others in the last decade, wildlife rehabilitators have become
more aware of and interested in alternatives to conventional medical practice.
This does not mean that they are turning away from conventional veterinary
care, but rather considering a wider range of options that might help their
wild patients regain health and return to the wild more quickly. Many of
these health care modalities, or approaches, are considered complementary
to conventional western medicine. They include homeopathy, acupuncture,
chiropractic, botanical (herbal) medicine, and flower essences.

Excerpt from
Homeopathy
Introduction
by Anna Maria Gardner MA Vet.MB MRCVS Holistic Veterinarian,
Certified in Veterinary Homeopathy
Homeopathic remedies are extremely dilute substances, which may be from
the plant, mineral or animal kingdoms, that are used to treat many types
of disease process.
A
single homeopathic remedy is chosen to treat the whole animal, including
their mental, emotional and physical symptoms. This is in contrast to conventional
or allopathic medicine where symptoms are suppressed or removed by the
use of drugs such as antibiotics or pain killers. Of course there are certain
life threatening situations where antibiotics are essential, but homeopathy
actually stimulates the body to heal itself, and strengthens the immune
system, and consequently leaves the body in a better state of health than
before it became sick.
Homeopathic remedies use minute amounts of substances to act as a trigger
to the body and stimulate its natural immune system. We are attempting
to make your pet as healthy as he or she can be and gradually build up
their body to the best that it can be. We are working with the immune system
and not against it and aiming for a cure. This can take time and some animals
will never be totally free of symptoms, but should live longer and healthier
lives as a result of the treatment they will receive. In practice this
means an animal can have a so called fatal illness but have an immune system
that with the right homeopathic trigger can overcome the illness. The immune
system which is encompassed in the term vital force depends on a variety
of factors. These include age of the animal, type of disease, duration
of illness as well as the innate vital force or qi that the animal was
born with. Drugs, poor nutrition, constant vaccinations, chemical treatments
for fleas and ticks all undermine the immune system and should be avoided
as much as possible. All these factors lead to the development of chronic
disease which is characterized by specific symptoms.
THE HEALING EFFECT
Initially when a homeopathic remedy is taken nothing may appear to happen.
The remedy will start to work but nothing may be apparent to begin with.
In acute conditions the effect is more rapid, and after a short time some
improvement may be noted. One important thing to look out for is an aggravation
- this refers to a slight worsening of the symptoms for a short while,
followed by improvement. This is the healing reaction to the body, and
is a good sign that the correct remedy was chosen. Usually in chronic disease
the aggravation may be seen after about three to five days. Then gradual
improvement should be noted. In acute disease situations where the onset
was more rapid and severe an aggravation might not necessarily occur or
be noticed. However, after one or more doses of the appropriate remedy
improvement should be noticed. In many cases acute illnesses are really
flare ups of underlying chronic disease, so a follow up with more chronic
treatment is often advisable and treats the real root of the problem and
prevents further episodes of acute disease. In chronic diseases one dose
of a homeopathic remedy is usually given, or a daily dose of a lower potency.
The effect is observed over several weeks. The aggravation, if it occurs
will usually be after about three to five days. Even though there may be
some worsening of symptoms, the overall feeling should be better - so the
animal may have more energy, and vitality than before, for example.
Giving more than one remedy at a time is also not to be recommended.
It is best to give a single, carefully chosen remedy, at the correct potency
and dosage. How long the remedy is effective for depends upon the vital
force or qi of the patient, the potency of the remedy, the specific remedy
that was given as well as the severity of the disease. The first rule of
homeopathy is wait, wait, wait. It is important to be observant to notice
the effects of the remedy and determine what is happening. Most importantly
was that remedy curative, or if another remedy going to be more effective.
Often the next time a chronic remedy is administered a higher potency must
be given the next time as the body has become stronger and a stronger remedy
is now needed to get a healing effect. more

Emergency Homeopathy
at Home by
Joe Aggen
"A
couple of weeks ago I came out to milk my goats and was dismayed to find
two of my new goat kids frozen to death. Upon closer examination,
the doe kid still seemed to have what was left of the life in her.
I brought her in the house and began working on her. I was getting
no response and when she did finally thaw out it seemed that there was
probably neurological damage(the closest thing I can use to describe her
state) as she could not stand, sit or hold her head up. She was like
a rag doll. I could feel the life slipping from her. I decided
to give her Carbo Veg. and in 10 minutes, she was standing and eating.
I know what it is like to lose an animal in this condition, so I know that
it was the remedy that turned her and not just getting warmed up.
I wish I had a video tape. It was the most amazing thing I have experienced
yet.
Last week our Australian cattle dog came home with a lacerated (it had
a slit all the way across and there was something protruding from it) eye
(probably from a bob cat) which was also pushed back in the socket.
I administered arnica for the trauma and then euphrasia. The eye
was completely healed within three days and there was no blindness. I have
seen homeopathy work over and over in my animals and my family and there
is no doubt in my mind that it is NOT a placebo"

- "My colleagues and I have found this product
(transfer factor) to be very effective in modulating the immune system.
Transfer
factor is a "soup" of immune-modulating factors, which contains a leukocyte-type
molecule that can passively transfer immunity from one mammal to another
by stimulating cell-mediated immunity and is antigen specific. Richard
Bennett, Ph.D., an Infectious Disease Microbiologist and Immunologist from
the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, believes
this could be the most significant development in animal health care in
decades. We have a great number of veterinarians and clients who are experiencing
very positive results in a broad area of disorders, including periodontal."

Homeopathic
treatment of animals
There is increasing concern about the use of antibiotics and other
anti microbial products in the farming industry. EU scientists and the
Commission have recommended immediate cuts in the use of antibiotics and
other anti microbial products. Growing resistance to antibiotics has led
to increasing difficulties in treating diseases such as pneumonia, tuberculosis
and salmonella infections. Drugs used as growth promoters in animal production
should be phased out and ultimately eliminated. It is recommended that
the use of antibiotics in human or veterinary medicine be kept to the essential
minimum in order to maintain their effectiveness and to prevent resistance.
Since the 1970s, the EU Commission has banned more than 20 antibiotics
from use in animal husbandry. A Council Decision to ban four antibiotics
used as growth-promoters came into effect on 1 July 1999.
An increasing number of organic farmers are using homeopathic remedies
instead of conventional drugs to treat their animals. ECCH is of the opinion
that an increase in homeopathic treatment of animals would result in reduced
need for the use of antibiotics and other anti-microbial products while
maintaining and improving the health of animals generally

I
own several homeopathic
kits at home and I keep one kit in the clove compartment of my car
for emergencies. I find the cost of the kits to be much more economical
than individual bottles. On average one homeopathic bottle in a kit cost
about US$ 2.35 instead of $9+ for a single individual
bottle. I only use one to three tiny little pellets as a dose when
treating myself, my family or my pets. Unlike allopathic medicine, the
size and quantities of homeopathic pellets make no difference in the therapeutic
results. One pellet, the size of a grain of sugar has the same therapeutic
effect as a pellet the size of a pea. Likewise, twenty pellets have the
same therapeutic effect as one pellet. Avoid exposing your remedies to
direct sunlight and strong odors (cleaners, mint, camphor). Endeavor to
refrain from handling the tablets directly with your fingers--it is better
to put the tablet into the bottle cap and dispense it from there.

Cancer Curable In Homeopathy ?
Based the writings of Dr Eli G Jones, MD - Definite
Medication: Containing Therapeutic Facts Gleaned from Forty Years Practice
"Cancer like other diseases is curable in Homeopathy. Why and how ?
To understand this, one has to understand the basic principle of homeopathy.
According to the principle of cure in Homeopathy, there is nothing that
is incurable provided there is sufficient energy 'Vital Force' in the patient
at the time of taking to or restorting to homeopathic treatment. According
to homeopathic scientists, without the cause, there cannot be a disease.
So the cause should be traced. If we find out the root of the disease than
there must be a medicine for it." more

Jack’s
Story: Homeopathy and one ferret
Note: Jack’s owner lives in Eugene, Oregon. She is a nurse and uses
a homeopathic physician for herself.
"Jack was severely scalded over the bottom almost half of his body with
immediate hair loss. He was also burned on his chest and front legs with
about 80% of his hair sloughing over the next week. He was a goopy little
guy with severe fluid loss. He was taken to the emergency vet within 15
minutes after being removed from the hot water. He spent the night there
and was given a shot of antibiotic and started on oral antibiotics.
He ate okay after three or four days but I had to start him on subcutaneous
fluids at day three due to noticeable dehydration from several fluid and
protein loss thru the large burned areas. On day five, he had a temperature
of 105 degrees. He was started on another antibiotic. On day seven he quit
eating and had lost almost a pound of weight by this time. Jack stopped
eating entirely and would choke when given ferret soup. He even choked
on Nutri-Cal and blue-green algae given from a syringe. Jack was unable
to swallow, his eyes were sunken and he was now one-half his former body
weight. His temperature was now up to 106. The vet pronounced that he was
dying.
The next day, Jack began shivering violently and his temperature dropped
to 97 (normal is about 101-103). Jack was unable to fight off the massive
infection. Anything that was put in his mouth - including antibiotics,
food, or fluid - resulted in choking and gagging. Everything was tried
to keep him warm from blankets warmed in the oven, hot water bottles but
nothing helped. The vet just prescribed more food and warmth. Against the
advice of the veterinarian, I called my personal homeopathic M.D. (The
Pitcairn’s, nationally known natural remedy/homeopathic veterinarians who
live in Eugene, have declined to work on ferrets). Jack would not survive
even a few more hours unless something was done.

even a few more hours unless something was done. My doctor suggested a
remedy called Pyrogen. These little pellets were crushed and put in Jack's
mouth. Jack choked and gagged but because the pellets dissolve quickly,
the remedy got into his system. A dose was given to him every 2 hours.
Within 6 hours, Jack was able to swallow ferret soup from a syringe without
choking. His temperature climbed to 100. When his temperature was up to
102-103, Jack stopped shivering. Then he never stopped eating! It was a
month before I was able to stop giving him fluids.
Pyrogen is made from rotted beef sitting in the sun for 2 weeks. Jack
was experiencing symptoms of a septic state or blood poisoning. In keeping
within homeopathic guidelines, we gave him a minute amount of what would
typically cause blood poisoning if given in larger amounts. This, of course,
is not the only remedy Jack got, but it was the one that saved his life.

form of medication NOT tested on animals - only humans! (Even vitamins
are tested on animals.) [Note: She used dozens of different remedies to
deal with the changing conditions - which is how homeopathic remedies are

Hypertrophic
Osteodystrophy (H.O.D.) cured with homeopathy
"In the past 25 years of raising Great Danes, I have had 4 cases of
HOD. The first 3 were treated by my Veterinarian the conventional way,
with steroids and antibiotics. All 3 eventually had to be put to sleep
because they kept getting worse each time they would "Crash". We would
treat them, they would improve, then go down again. If anyone has ever
seen a dog with HOD, they are pitiful. They become very cowhocked, roach
backed, in a lot of pain, and no appetite. They run an extremely high fever.
Their joints are hot, enlarged and extremely tender to the touch."
"At 4 1/2 months Whitney was diagnosed with HOD. She had a fever of
105.2 - joints swollen - very painful - would not get up. She would cry
out if you touched any of her legs. Jim's first reaction was "take her
in and put her to sleep". I told him I wanted to try Homeopathy this time."

Testimonial about the amazing healing power of homeopathy
by Shirley (author of this website)
Part 1 - When we got our new
dog Shasta, she was severely emaciated and weak; she had diarrhea, massive
wax discharge from her ears which were continually irritated and inflamed
and she had also an a ongoing eye and nasal discharge. Soon she developed
miosotis of the jaw bones (inflammation of the muscle of the jaw bone)
and could hardly eat because the slightest movement of her mouth caused
severe pain. The vet told me that the her immune system was failing, that
nothing could be done to save her and suggested that I put her to
sleep. 10 years later she is still happily with us.
Part 2 - I have personally witnessed
the amazing healing power of homeopathy, herbal extracts and Reiki energy
healing in traumatic emergency situations and in acute and chronic disease
with my older dog Shasta. Some of the healings, which took place, were
nothing short of miraculous. - Read my testimonial of a complete recovery

and a stroke with paralysis of the rear end.
Homeopathy
for Cats
by Michelle Bernard
"One thing that I really don't care to have to do to my cats is medicate
them. Cats in general don't like to be messed with and pilling them or
applying topical medicine is the ultimate in "messing". It's hard to find
a more compelling reason for the use of classical homeopathy, a form of
medicine where one dose (which entails "chucking" a few tiny pellets down
a cat's throat) can make the difference between life and death or between
chronic illness and a life of freedom." Michelle Bernard

FIRST-AID
REMEDY KIT
The homeopathic first-aid kit for pets is designed for use with the
video, narrated by Dr. Christina Chambreau, DVM. It
contains the 5 remedies discussed in the video plus the remedy ARNICA for
shock and bruising, and is the complete complement to the video. It enables
owners of companion animals to have on hand the necessary remedies to treat
digestive disorders, skin complaints, nervousness, splinters, arthritic
conditions and much more. The Doctor uses gorgeous cats and dogs to present
the remedies and demonstrates how to administer them. Dr. Chambreau discusses
which ailments she feels can be comfortably treated by the beginner and
when to seek a health care professional. Having the remedy kit on hand,
the pet owner can begin to save money on veterinary bills and keep their
animals happy and healthy, naturally. There is no better educational tool
to teach the use of homeopathy for companion animals. The first-aid kit
comes complete with a cross-reference chart that keynotes the remedies
and their uses. Designed to stand alone, it works best in conjunction with
the video.

Care for Cats and Dogs : Small Doses for Small Animals by DVM, Don
Hamilton
"This book is an understandable introduction to veterinary homeopathy
for the beginner. Dr. Hamilton explains the history and theory of homeopathy
in such a way that virtually anyone can grasp the basic principles. However,
this is not just an introductory text. It is also a great reference tool
for the more experienced animal guardian. Part One covers Homeopathic Principles,
including an introduction, the nature of disease and the nature of cure.
Very important tenets of this modality, and very different from allopathic
medicine. Part Two provides step-by-step guidance on treating animals with
homeopathy. It also explains when NOT to treat your animal without the
guidance of an experienced homeopathic practitioner. While Part Three discusses
vaccinations and the role they play in the health and illness in our companion
animals. Part Four is the Materia Medica, which describes the individual
remedies. "An amazon.com reviewer

Disaster in Von Shrado Great Danes' Kennel by Sandy Hann
Read the success stories that Jim and Sandy Hann have experienced with
homeopathy for their champion dogs and for themselves "In the past 4 years,
I feel I have made a lot of progress with my dogs health. One in particular,
Ginny. Her first litter, she whelped one live puppy, one dead and then
a C-section to remove 2 dead puppies. After a lot of homeopathy
treatments, her second litter was a litter of 7 whelped normally and
her last litter, a litter of 4 sired by Fridge whelped normally. I had
bred her 2 other times to Fridge when he was alive but she did not conceive.
My Ch Betty is another. She just whelped a litter of 8 live puppies
in April. Her previous litter was another litter of 8 but 4 were born dead.
Before that she had a litter of 2. She received extensive homeopathy
treatment in between the last 2 litters and absolutely no vaccines.
She had had a Rabies Vaccine a month before being bred with the litter
with 4 dead puppies in it. You can continue

THE VACCINATION
DILEMMA and YOUR HEALTHY COMPANIONS
by Dr Charles E Loops DVM
Homeopathic veterinarians and other holistic practitioners have maintained
for some time that vaccinations do more harm than they provide benefits.
Vaccinations represent a major assault on the body's immune system. Attentuated
organisms or chemicalled killed viruses or bacteria are injected directly
into the blood stream, an unnatural route of infection. This profound insult,
avoiding the body's first line of defenses, and flooding the system with
millions of organisms or viral particles, stresses the immune system in
a way not of natures design. This insult causes irregularities and abnormalities
in the immune system which then manifests as chronic diseases in animals.
These chronic diseases range from life-threatening conditions such as
auto-immune crises to conditions destroying the quality of life of an animal
as in chronic skin allergies. What we are now seeing are generations of
over-vaccinated animals and these current offspring are suffering the penalty
of this medical abuse. In an attempt to control a naturally occurring process
of population control and survival of the fittest, the medical establishment
has convinced people that mass innoculations are for the good of all, overlooking
the health of the individual. Where vaccinations have helped in eradicating
or reducing the incidence of severe, acute disease processes, the result
has been to plague humanity with more insiduous, chronic diseases that
are much more difficult to treat and that lower the quality of life for
many individual animals and people. In all of this, there needs to be BALANCE,
and the following are my recommendations for vaccinating or not vaccinating
and some comments about diet. 1. Puppies under three months of age should
not be vaccinated. Vaccinations are much more stressful on the underdeveloped
immune system.
Also, these vaccinations are much less effective at providing immunity
before three months of age. If you feel you must vaccinate, do so with
one vaccination of Distemper at three months, followed by a vaccination
for Parvovirus at four months of age, and stop with that. If you can't
find a single Distemper vaccine use the Distemper-measles combination.
Use killed vaccines only.
2. Kittens should only be vaccinated for Panleukopenia and not before
three months of age. All other vaccinations should be avoided. One vaccine
is sufficient.
3. Puppies and kittens can be given homeopathic
nosodes beginning at three weeks of age, if there is a potential for
exposure to Distemper, Parvovirus, or Panleukopenia. These nosodes can
be used until vaccinations are given or continued periodically for the
first year of life, if vaccinations are not given. Common sense should
be used in avoiding exposure of very young animals to other, possible unhealthy,
animals of the same species.
4. Booster vaccinations are completely unnecessary. Studies are now
showing that these vaccinations are effective for many years and most probably
for life. Vaccinated animals do not need any boosters. Homeopathic nosodes
can be given periodically if you are concerned or if you think your animals
live a high risk, life style.
5. Rabies Vaccinations should be given as dictated by state laws. Lyssin,
the homeopathic nosode, should be given within a few hours after the vaccination.
Clearly, the rabies vaccination is effective for many years more than state
laws require booster vaccination.
6. Booster vaccinations can cause SEVERE set-backs when an animal is
being treated homeopathically for chronic problems. They can completely
erase any progress that has been made towards improving an animal's health.
7. My personal recommendation is NOT to vaccinate at all. The best road
to good health is feeding a diet rich in fresh foods, raw meats for the
carnivores, and avoiding vaccinations and allopathic medications. Antbiotics
and other allopathic drugs should only be used in situations where their
use is clearly indicated, and this should be only in potentially, life-threatening
situations. Every time you suppress a symptom the body produces, you are
potentially lowering the health status of the body system. Treating with
the correctly prescribed, homeopathic remedy, herbs, or other non-invasive
therapies, not of a chemical nature, will enhance your health and your
companions health.

Routine
Vaccination: Is it really safe and effective? Most recently,
an article appeared in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association
entitled
"Are We Vaccinating Too Much?"
Dr. Richard Pitcairn D.V.M. Ph.D:"In this
article we begin to address the subject of vaccinosis, the general name
for chronic dis-ease caused by vaccines. For some readers the very idea
that vaccines are anything but wonderful and life-saving may come as a
surprise, and it's not a very pleasant one. After all, the general population
pictures vaccines as one of modern medicine's best and brightest moments,
saving literally millions from the scourge of diseases like poliomyelitis
and smallpox. " Dr. Pitcairn DVM, Ph.D
Dr. Chambreau DVM: "Holistic veterinarians
are finding that vaccines are causing great harm to our animals (and ourselves).
To cure an animal of any problem we have found through experience that
we must use homeopathic remedies that are known to reverse vaccine related
problems as well as fit this individual." In this paper, Dr.
Chambreau DVM, offers vaccination guidelines and homemopathic prevention
schedule.
Dr. McCluggage DVM,- "...we must stop advocating
yearly vaccines because of the harm we are doing to the animals we vaccinate.
He covered the homeopathic concept of "vaccinosis". Vaccinosis is a disease
entity that may be introduced through vaccinating animals or people. Once
vaccinosis develops, there is a disturbance in the bodies vital forces
that leads to symptoms of chronic disease that can be very difficult (and
often impossible) to cure. Dr. McCluggage also stated that there are no
good reasons to recommend annual vaccinations for our companion animals.
" Dr. McCluggage DVM
Donna Starita Mehan DVM: "Routine" vaccination
has adverse side-effects, either short or long term. With vaccines that
are repeated year after year, the frequency and severity of these side-effects
in our pets has increased dramatically. Most of the problems involve the
immune system. After all, the immune system is what vaccines are designed
to stimulate. But they do so in a very unnatural way that can overwhelm
and confuse the immune system and can result in increased susceptibility
to acute infections (such as ear infections in dogs, bladder infections
in cats), chronic tapeworm problems, or in more degenerative cases, cancer."

Overcoming
vaccination hurdles
Helping our animal companions through potential problems
by by Kristy Lampe, DIHom
"I attended a lecture by Don Hamilton, DVM, in 1996. I saw a slide
showing the incidence of negative side-effects after vaccination. Since
then, I have known to give my animals 3 doses of Thuja 30X after vaccination
… on day 1, day 2, and day 5. We’ve never had another problem."
Below are excerpts from Homeopathy
Today magazine May/June 04 issue) I invite you to
subscribe to learn how Kristy treated each of her dogs successfully
with the correct homeopathic remedies. (Some dogs required other
remedies besides thuja)
Paralysis from a “bad batch” - Back in 1989, when our whippets,
Leilani and Lovey, were 5 years old, they received their annual DHAPP [distemper,
hepatitis, adenovirus, parainfluenza, parvovirus] vaccination, injected
in the scruff of the neck at 10:00 a.m. on a Saturday morning. Around 11:00
a.m., Leilani started screaming. I rushed to her and found her dragging
herself with her front legs; the rear legs were paralyzed.
Pierre feverish after rabies shot - In late 1989, we adopted a 5-month-old
male whippet. We were told that he had not been vaccinated, so we dutifully
took him to the vet for a rabies vaccination. (We found out later that
he had already had a rabies shot at four months old.) Pierre had some interesting
symptoms that evening after the rabies shot. First, he declined dinner
(highly unusual!). Then he wouldn’t get up for the evening walk (usually
he was first to the leash rack). Upon touching him, I realized he had a
fever, so I got out the dog thermometer. It registered 104.7?F (normal
for an unvaccinated animal is about 100--101?F, vaccinated is about 101--102?F).
I noticed that his eyes were glazed and staring, his gums were bright red,
and the skin in his groin was bright red, too.
Energetic puppy turns lethargic - In 1990, we found ourselves
with 5 puppies, all needing their rabies shots at 4 months of age, as required
by law. Being a bit gun-shy about vaccinations after the experiences mentioned
above, I gave each of the puppies a dose of Thuja 30X upon leaving the
vet’s office. This was great! No fevers, no swelling …However, several
days later, Joy was still very lethargic (she had been the animated one
up till then), so I decided to give her --- learn

Blaze gets rambunctious -
In 1991, one of the puppies (who had by
now gone to live with another family) decided I needed to learn how to
deal with behavior issues. Blaze got his second rabies vaccination on a
Thursday evening when he was 16 months old. His family spent the following
Saturday planting 2 trees, 12 bushes, and 4 flats of flowers. That evening
while they were having supper, he dug up and chewed everything! When they
scolded him, he just “smirked” and took off, seemingly forgetting every
single command and trick he’d been taught in obedience class.
Joy develops a lump - In 1992, when Joy had her second rabies vaccination,
I knew there was a risk of reaction based on the lethargy she had experienced
after her first shot the previous year, so I gave her some Thuja 30X immediately
after the vaccine. Five days later, she developed a huge lump on her neck.
I must admit I freaked out until I realized it was at the site of the injection.
I gave her a dose of Thuja 30X, but it didn’t reduce the lump. I found
some lecture notes on materia medica from my study group.

"These 200+ dogs are given a distemper vaccine and a Parvovirus vaccine
only, at age 10 weeks and 1 year. No other vaccines are given except occasionally
rabies, when needed. Their diet varies from home-prepared to commercial.
These dogs are having litters and showing at 10 years of age, and live
to 16 or so. In the States, many Shepherds are dying by the age of 10.
Other breeders have found that stopping vaccination has made their line
much healthier, and usually immune (through good health) to the infectious
agents that usually cause disease. Not always, of course. Some dogs or
cats are very susceptible to disease and will become infected and may die.
Most survive epidemics with mild disease, if treated holistically."

A prominent German newspaper recently reported on the impressively
effective use of homeopathic medicines in treating chickens. Approximately
800,000 laying hens in 140 poultry farms are presently under homeopathic

veterinary care, and not a single antibiotic has been prescribed since
1983.
Treating Canine Aggressive Behavior
with Homeopathy
by Monica Clarke
After reading a posted message about an aggressive Cocker Spaniel on
www.petfinders.com, I adopted Rusty from Cocker Rescue in northern Washington
State in October 2004, sight unseen. He was close to being euthanized
after being in three different homes and displaying extreme aggressive
behavior, including several incidences of biting. He was abused as
a puppy until he was about one year old, when his person dropped him off
at an animal shelter. Cocker Rescue found a home for him, but
it didn’t last due to his aggression. They took him back and then
placed a plea for help at Petfinders after fostering him for four months.
He was a very difficult dog to live with. Constantly tense, growling,
showing his teeth, biting (he even sent me to the Emergency Room once),
and not at all engaged or interested in life around him. He seemed
to be caught in a solitary world of mistrust. Once when I accidentally
nudged him in the middle of the night, around 3a.m., he half awoke and
stalked me, crawling on his belly, eyes staring straight through me, emitting
a low growl, through the bedroom until I retreated to another room and
closed the door. He did not show aggressive tendencies, however,
to my 15 year old Samoyed, 15 year old cat, or 8 month old kitten; but
he also didn’t have any idea how to “play.”
I immediately took him to a canine behavioral therapist to learn how
to effectively train Rusty and build a trusting relationship. I have
had many dogs in my lifetime and trained them all, but I was amazed at
how much I learned. While our daily relaxation/training sessions
helped, he was still tense, would attack anyone coming through my door,
and was not the happy pup he should be at 1-1/2 years old. I found
myself dreading to enter my own home and was exhausted at having to be
constantly on guard. After the 3a.m. stalking incident, I decided it was
time for a homeopathic remedy.
Rusty was given a well selected homeopathic remedy on a Saturday afternoon
in late November 2004. The next morning he was less rigid in his
posture. He gradually improved over the next few months and at this
writing (April 2004), he’s a totally different dog. “Aggressive”
is a term I wouldn’t even use with him now. He acts his age, is happy,
has learned to play, doesn’t growl or bare his teeth, and can’t wait to
show visitors his toys.
I particularly enjoy treating aggressive dogs. Along with behavioral
therapy (for both human and dog), and homeopathy, there is hope for these
tormented animals and their concerned guardians.

Why
I won't use the Elizabethan collar on my animals. The Elizabethan
collar is a type of plastic collar that is effective in preventing pets
from licking or biting themselves. The only time I will use such collar
is to prevent my animal from tearing up surgical sutures, until healing
is complete. I will never use such collar to prevent my dog or cat
from licking skin eruptions, hot spots, or inflammed and infected
area on their bodies. The built in germicide found in the saliva
of a dog or a cat amazingly heals wounds in record time. Any injuries are
carefully licked and coated with antiseptic saliva from the tongue. This
aids in preventing infection entering into a wound. Learn

SELECTING AND WORKING WITH A HOLISTIC
VETERINARIAN
By Christina Chambreau, D.V.M.
As you read the many articles I have written on this site, you will
see they fall in to two categories – General Health of the Individual and
Specific Types of Treatments. There are many supplements and even treatments
that you give successfully without the help of a professional. If there
is an emergency, or what you try does not work, you will need to consult
with a holistic veterinarian. Yearly exams are essential and it is best
if your holistic veterinarian is within driving distance; or choose a local,
conventional veterinarian and work with your holistic veterinarian by telephone.
As I have stated in previous articles holistic medicine takes the perspective
of treating the whole animal. Even if there is a current problem, for example
diarrhea or itching, a good holistic veterinarian will ask questions about
what problems there have been in the past, what changes in the household
or the environment may have triggered the current complaint and if there
is anything that makes the current complaints better or worse. They will
also evaluate the overall energy level of the animal. Their goal is to
make the animal healthier for life, not just to get rid of the current
symptom. They will educate you and explain what they see when physically
examining your animal.
Some of the modalities that holistic veterinarians may use include acupuncture,
herbs, flower essences, homeopathy, chiropractic, network chiropractic,
nutrition, glandulars, Reiki, Tellington touch, healing touch, long distance
healing modalities. Some of these have certification programs with a year
or more of courses, exams and evaluation of clinical ability. Others are
either self-taught or not regulated. Some are wonderful with your animal
-- others great at explaining to you what is happening with your animals.
A few are good in both areas. Few veterinarians are perfect, and we all
have bad days. Your animal should at least be comfortable with your choice
and you should be able to get your questions and concerns addressed.
The number of holistic veterinarians is rapidly increasing, so the first
place to look is in your own city. Call the local health food store or
holistic health practitioner (chiropractor, acupuncturist, etc.) and ask
if they know of any holistic veterinarians or ones that are open to supporting
your holistic work with your animals. The Internet is your next tool as
most organizations have web sites and many breed associations and concerned
pet owners have web sites that share names of good holistic veterinarians.
Many veterinary organizations also have phone numbers that you can use,
but since offices may not be well staffed it will be quicker to use the
Internet. The information below should help you find the most appropriate
homeopathic/holistic veterinarian for your pet. Please note that the lists
of veterinarians on these web sites may not always be up-to-date. If your
first attempts lead nowhere, don’t give up, keep trying!
Veterinary Homeopathy Organizations
COURSES taught by Dr.
Christina Chambreau
Once you have several recommendations, how do you select one to start
with and then how do you know if you are getting good service?
Start by asking the veterinarian a few pertinent questions:
What modalities are used?
What is their training? Are they certified? (Being certified is not critical
since some excellent homeopathic veterinarians are not certified because
they do not want to follow the lengthy protocol required to be certified).
Even if certified, use your own judgement once you start with them.
Is their goal overall health or to merely treat the current complaint?
What organizations do they belong to? (Just because they belong to AHVMA,
or AVH, does not mean they are trained or capable in those modalities.)
What are their recommendations about diet and vaccines? This will certainly
vary from holistic veterinarian to holistic veterinarian. Few good ones
will be recommending the same vaccine protocol as conventional veterinarians.
At the least they will prefer fewer vaccines, or less frequently or be
open to your preferences. At the least they will say that different diets
may be needed and that some type of fresh diet is the best.
As they treat your animal, a good holistic veterinarian will usually:
Ask about the animal’s history and overall energy, what might have caused
the current problem, review the environment and inquire about what makes
the symptoms better or worse. Their physical exam will be gentle, complete
and they will show you (you may need to ask) what is meant by “gingivitis,
big lymph nodes, heart murmur”, etc. They will be willing to answer your
questions and explain why they are recommending a particular treatment.
If they recommend conventional treatments (antibiotics, prednisone, etc.)
they will explain to you why they choose this over holistic, and give you
a chance to request the more holistic treatment. They will not do anything
(vaccinate, treat) without asking you first. They will recommend fewer
or no vaccinations and a raw meat or at least more natural diet. They will
schedule follow up appointments until your animal is really healthy. They
will be open to your suggestions and evaluations. If you feel there has
been no improvement, they will discuss with you different treatment options
or convince you why their treatment is actually working. They will not
be threatened by a request for a second opinion.
What you can do to help your holistic veterinarian: Keep a dated
journal of any problems, even little ones. (See ”Keeping a Journal on your
animals.”) Write down any treatments given and any reactions to the treatment.
Call if symptoms worsen, or if the animal is less energetic and less happy,
or if you have concerns.
Keep your follow-up appointments.
Finally, as you already realize, you are responsible for your animal's
health and not your practitioner. If you feel the practitioner is palliating
or suppressing, not curing, talk to them of your concerns and request a
referral or simply choose another one yourself. Read, talk to other people,
talk with your animal health care providers, and take courses. Pay attention
to what works and what does not work (here again is where that useful journal
helps you to keep track). You may have a wonderful veterinary acupuncturist
who thinks you should vaccinate and feed canned food. You certainly can
use her for acupuncture, but follow your heart and feed raw meat and do
not vaccinate indiscriminately. You stand firm with what you feel is working.
You need to be flexible enough to realize you (or your practitioner) have
made a mistake and it is time for a change.
